Carney Chukwuemeka has officially committed his international future to Austria, shutting the door on potential call-ups from Nigeria and England, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

His switch has been ratified by FIFA, ending his long-standing association with the English FA and giving him the opportunity to feature for Austria at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 22-year-old midfielder has opted to represent Austria, the country where he was born, despite being eligible to play for England and Nigeria.

Aside from Austria and England, Chukwuemeka was also eligible to represent Nigeria at the senior level through his Nigerian parents.

In February 2025, he was reportedly considering representing Nigeria alongside Lesley Ugochukwu, but an official of the Nigeria Football Federation denied the claims.

Despite growing up in Northampton and progressing through England’s youth ranks from the U-17s to the U-20s, the former Chelsea midfielder has opted for a change in direction. Chukwuemeka’s last involvement with England came via a U-21 call-up in 2023, but injury prevented him from featuring.

His inclusion would provide a boost to Ralf Rangnick’s squad as the Austria coach continues efforts to lower the average age of his midfield. Chukwuemeka would add youthful energy alongside experienced players such as David Alaba and Marcel Sabitzer.

Chukwuemeka’s decision also reflects his recent stability at club level. After struggling for consistent playing time at Chelsea, he secured a permanent £24m move to Borussia Dortmund in August 2025 following a successful loan spell.

He could make his senior international debut later this month, with Austria scheduled to face Ghana on March 27 before taking on South Korea on March 31.

Before then, Chukwuemeka will aim to finish the season strongly with Dortmund. The Bundesliga side currently sit second in the league standings with 55 points from 25 matches, 11 points behind leaders Bayern Munich, and will face Augsburg on Saturday.

He has been a regular presence at Signal Iduna Park, contributing five goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.
