I bring my own biscuits when visiting, if I’m not offered tea in 10-15minutes then I know I’m making my own as do my friends and family. I accept I am barbaric
What’s Iceland up to
I mean this is Ireland. When I was younger I couldn’t go to a friend’s house without their mother filling me with food – whether I wanted it or not 🤣
And they would get the same in my house
I think it pretty accurately describes Europe tbh.
In Poland the hospitality was borderline violent. I have never failed so badly at politely declining food and drink.
In Ireland I think the main thing is people don’t have stuff to hand to offer people. What are you going to do cook a roast for someone who randomly turns up to your house? At most I can make you some chicken nuggets.
Germany: darkest of blue, almost black!
Depends on a lot. Quick visit to someone’s house? Be offered tea and some biscuits or maybe a sandwich. I don’t think many people would offer a full meal unless someone had invited you for that meal or you’re staying at their house.
Did a Canadian put this map together? Feels like someone who has never been to Europe
The Irish are greedy cunts, they will probably ask for payment afterwards
I think here in Ireland they are counting pints as food…
Seems pretty accurate. I suppose it depends how long you expect the guest to stay.
New country off the west coast of France?????
Notice how the blue countries have great climates for growing food year round, while the red counties are more snow-bound. Makes sense when you think about it really. Harder to grow, harder to give.
Sure look at mrs Doyle for our example
It does depend on the length of the visit but if they are sitting more than 5 minutes, they would definitely be offered tea at least and then spend the next half an hour declining it as they are going soon. But after that the kettle is going on anyway and they are getting food if they like it or not. Do the other countries just accept the refusal and not try to force the guests (or you know actually listen to them).
Each day I become more and more convinced that mapporn maps are actually just trolling.
I’d love to see a map related to drink, declining tea is a cardinal sin here.
I cannot have someone in my house without offering them food and drink. If they’re here during a mealtime they will be fed. I’ve found it was similar in Southern Europe. My wife’s family is English and in my experience they would always offer tea and biscuits or whatever, so the map seems a bit unkind there.
So Protestants don’t like giving out free food is what I’ve got from this map
I’ve lived in 4 different regions on the map and I can tell you is accurate
Does tea count as food? I’d say it’s fairly common to be offered tea and maybe some biscuits.
I always offer food, if I’m cooking or getting a take away.
At the very least, tea/coffee and some bickys.
This was researched by someone that doesn’t think biscuits are food.
Does a cup of tea count as food?
Just a cup? Just a small one? Just a drop in your hand?
Irish man here, the best we can offer you is a “cuppa” tea and a biscuit.
If someone enters my house. By fuck they’re leaving full if I have to force it down their throats.
One does *not* simply tell an Italian you’re not hungry!
I think this is a “do you want a cup of tea?” type response and not a “I’m going to eat, you stay here” thing that the swedes are being dragged for.
Im from Sweden. If you are invited or staying over I and everyone I know are counting on food, dinner and if staying over breakfast. But if you just knock on the door you will be asked If you want to stay for dinner. Very few will start cooking something just because you showed up. Then instead will be offered coffe and cake/sandwich.
Germany couldnt be more wrong. You will always get some food and drinks, its not really a choice
Usually, we do give food to people or the option to have some food as long as they are at least a semi-planned visit
I’ve had two very opposing experiences growing up in Ireland. It was the 70’s when I was a smallie so everyone was skint. If we were at a friend’s house at dinner time, we would wait for them in the back garden or what evervriom we were playing in. We were not inviting to eat with them. I never thought anything of it. However, when we visited relations in Cavan, they couldn’t offer us enough. They were really like scenes out of Fr Ted.
I live in the UK now and recognise the feeder in me when my kids’ friend’s stay over. There’s a fear I don’t have enough for them even though I always have left overs.
As an amateur Historian of European History since the 70’s l can state that there is one dividing line that is rarely mentioned. Europe has since the coming of Protestantism been separated by RELIGION. Once upon a time it was not called Europe but simply Christendom. Then after Luther,Henry VIII and the devastating Protestant victories of Gustavus Adolphus in Sweden during the Reformation,Catholicism itself was made illegal in Scandinavia. The thirty years War was a disaster for Europe, over 10 million died and the bitter hatred between Catholics and Protestants was sown. There are so many aspects of Catholic Vs Protestant Countries which are fascinating. Does anyone remember the PIIGS? During the famous Worldwide crash a decade ago many Countries were caught with their pants down financially. Many CATHOLIC Countries that is. PIIGS=Portugal, Ireland,Italy,Greece,Spain. ALL traditionally Catholic. What’s that you say? None of these Countries are truly “Catholic” anymore, few practise their religion today, yes but the Centuries of custom, tradition and heritage of their religion is still very active in the PIIGS. All the Piigs had one thing in common, they had all overborrowed, overstretched their budget, spent like their was no tomorrow ( look up Valencia and what that City did during the Boom) In lreland people were paying their mortgage AND buying several apartments in Bulgaria!😂 Why did this crazy spending happen in the Catholic Countries mostly? One answer. THE PROTESTANT WORK ETHIC. Catholics,God help us,we are lazy, spendthrift and insecure as people. The Protestants had none of this. They were raised to painstakingly spend each cent as if it was their last, they were always given a superior education with 99% going on to College and given real knowledge of how the financial World works. They are also very FRUGAL. Thus when the tide went out it was only the Catholics who were naked. None of the Protestant Countries had overborrowed during the boom but simply worked hard, saved and few suffered to the degree of the PIIGS. The Catholics would usually leave School early, take poor paying jobs and rarely rose to positions of importance. How is this relevant to the subject? Quite simply if you travel in the poorest parts of Spain,Sicily,Italy or the Catholic parts of France, the lrish Countryside then you may come upon hospitality, food, tea, coffee, something and the equation that will be learned is thus= The Poorer the Home you enter, the greater effort will be made to lay on a spread and to show you hospitality. To further see examples of the Great Protestant/Catholic divide one can watch popular culture, films like TITANIC which give a perfect illustration of the Rich Protestant first class people boarding the ship as they step from their cars and the servants transfers their luggage to their luxury cabins to go on a holiday or for business. The lrish Catholics? They beg, borrow or gamble their way down to 3rd class or lower and hope and pray they will make their fortune in America, the former travels by choice, the latter through poverty and necessity. You will find no hugs or big spreads laid on for you in a Protestant Country, for this you must travel to a Catholic one.
Usually yes, and almost always aren’t very different to my ears. Need percentages. Anyway I most often wouldn’t get food when I visited friends in Dublin growing up. Be lucky to get it at home. That said we generally met outside and ran riot.
Germans will offer you food, but if you politely decline it gets taken away. So just say yes if you want some.
Scotland is wrong only Glasgow and the West coast should be blue.. there is a famous phrase about visiting people in the rest of Scotland “so you’ll have had your tea then!?” (Tea is your evening meal)
Moved to Ireland years ago and I really don’t care for tea, so never thought to offer it. Finally got the hint when a neighbour started bringing her own tea bags.
My mother would serve up microwaved spring rolls, samosas and any other frozen crap she’s find in the supermarket. So not ‘food’ per se, just the useless pestering of an annoying oulwan.
What’s it look like if it’s changed from food to a drink..tea, beer, coffee. I’d say it’d be almost the opposite picture
