Iran may have begun planning retaliatory drone strikes on California, launched from the Pacific Ocean, amid war with the U.S., the FBI recently warned.
However, officials also cautioned they have no specific information about a threat and it hadn’t yet been substantiated.
The alarming alert was sent to law enforcement agencies in California, according to ABC News and The Los Angeles Times.
“We … acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United State Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the US conducted strikes against Iran,” the alert states.
At the same time, it goes on to say: “We have no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack.”

“It’s not been deemed credible at this time,” one source noted to the Times, which further reported that “the warning was cautionary and there was no indication Iran was planning an attack or that it could successfully launch one.”
The information for the warning came from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Times reported.
Iran has not successfully struck any U.S. states since the war began last month, though it has sought to pummel a range of allied areas and American assets in the Middle East.
At least seven U.S. service members have died in such attacks so far.
War with Iran started with U.S. and Israeli strikes on the country in late February as part of what the U.S. called an operation both to topple a hostile power and prevent its nuclear ambitions.
Iran has vowed retaliation, with its government naming Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s son as his successor after he was killed early in the war.
The Trump administration has offered competing timelines and rationales for when and how the conflict will end.
