Get ready for an evening of French chanson and international musical flair when the ensemble Paris Chansons performs at The Birchmere on March 13.

The Los Angeles-based group, a seven-member ensemble known for blending classic French songs with global musical influences, promises a performance that combines nostalgia, innovation and emotional connection. The group’s repertoire is rooted primarily in French music but also incorporates a variety of international styles that reflect the musicians’ backgrounds and the diverse audiences they attract.

“We’re performing primarily French music, about 75% French music, with other world flavors,” said founder and vocalist Julia Kantor. “We do original renditions of famous French songs from classic to contemporary artists and then sprinkle in some Eastern European gypsy classics and a little Italian and other world influences.”

The upcoming concert marks the group’s first appearance at The Birchmere and its second time performing in the Washington region. Paris Chansons made its local debut in 2019 with two sold-out concerts organized by the French and Armenian embassies, which paid tribute to the legendary French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour.

The group was formed about 12 years ago when Kantor set out to create a musical project celebrating the rich tradition of French chanson while presenting it in a fresh and contemporary way. What began as a passion project has grown into a touring ensemble that performs across the United States and internationally.

Kantor, who was born in Ukraine, developed her love for French culture while living and studying in Rennes, France, where she became fluent in the language. Today she leads the ensemble as both producer and vocalist, guiding the group’s artistic direction and helping shape its distinctive sound.

The ensemble features a diverse lineup of musicians from around the world. Vocalist Max Cohen, born in Morocco and raised in Israel, grew up surrounded by French music and delivers soulful interpretations shaped by North African influences. Guitarist and vocalist Jacob Kantor, born in Moscow and co-founder of the group with Julia Kantor, delivers expressive guitar work and vocals that are central to the ensemble’s sound.

Keyboardist Jeff Lams brings extensive experience as an arranger, producer and musical director; violinist Endre Balogh adds a classical dimension to the group. Rounding out the ensemble are bassist Adam Cohen and drummer Sinclair Lott.

Paris Chansons’ performances typically feature songs made famous by legendary artists such as Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour alongside works by contemporary performers like Zaz. Rather than simply reproducing well-known recordings, the group aims to reinterpret the music in ways that feel both familiar and new.

“We always strive to do original renditions of the artists whose music we perform,” Kantor said. “People who come to the shows will hear these songs in a way they’ve never heard before, but they will still feel familiar.”

The group’s concerts are designed to create a shared experience for audiences, many of whom have a personal connection to the music. Kantor noted fans often come from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, including Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Francophone regions such as France and Quebec.

“These are the songs that are like the soundtrack to their lives,” she said. “In every show, there will absolutely be moments where people are dancing. The energy just goes to really high places.”

For those unfamiliar with French chanson, Kantor said the show offers a welcoming introduction to the genre.

“If you love French and international music, this is going to be everything and more than what you expect,” she said. “But even if you don’t know French music, you can still be completely transported by the experience. It’s passionate, romantic, exciting and moving.”

When Paris Chansons takes the stage at The Birchmere, the ensemble hopes audiences will feel as though they have been taken on a musical journey across cultures and generations.
