Thanks for clicking on this. I have been living in Lux for 6 months and working remotely for a company in another country but, alas, my job this far has been from satisfying to say the least, with a toxic company culture…, so I have been starting to look elsewhere, and I’d be grateful if you could give me some input on your company, possibilities there, and some advice.

I have been working in a super-specific technical field up until now but, after my current job, I have to admit I am completely fed up with this. Even sadder is that I am sitting on the Board of Directors of the professional association of my field and that I should try to motivate young people to pursue a career in it, even if I am currently completely demotivated by it myself. My technical community is small and, thus, jobs are abundant but in very specific and far-away locations, and you can count all potential and interesting employers with your fingers and still you would have a couple fingers left. After the current bad and dispiriting experience (unfortunately this is the best word to describe it 🙁 ), I have realized how bad of an idea it is to keep working in a field with such a limited employment pool and I am looking forward to moving into project management, where I can profit of my technical knowledge in a broader way.

Amazon came quickly into consideration as an employer but, unfortunately, I have found very difficult to contact any person working there to ask them how things are there. I have made my DD, learned the leadership principles, read everything I could read but having an actual conversation with someone is proving hard. I have messaged a couple people on LinkedIn just asking whether they could assess me a bit and tell me how things are there, alas unsuccessfully, so I come to you to see if there is any anonymous kind person that would like to give me a bit of input/advice and, if they’d be so kind, a bit of discussion that could help me in my transition. Even if you don’t work for Amazon but do know of some place my profile could fit in, please, by all means, let me know. Thank you.

Some (eventually useful) background about me: M31, European citizen, PhD in engineering by an elite university in Europe (summa cum laude, multiple international awards… the full package), a couple months away from graduating from an Executive MBA, hyperpolyglot (7 languages at different levels, among which excellent spoken and written DE, FR fluent but I am terrible at writing it, native in two additional major European languages), knowledge of project management (Lean, Agile (Scrum), and ofc Waterfall and such). My experience has been in the public sector (the mentioned elite university, almost 7 years there) and my current job (just passed the 1-year mark).

I am not saying all this to brag (would be pointless in an anonymous platform anyway) but only in case you know of some position I should apply to. I have applied to a couple positions on [Amazon.jobs](https://Amazon.jobs) but I am finding the application process a bit cryptic and I am being, essentially, ghosted by both the recruiting portal and the employees I could find online.

As I said, any input you could give me at this stage would be really helpful. Many thanks for reading.

TL; DR: Looking for advice to find a new job in tech, preferably in project management, and understanding what there is out there and what chances there are. Any input is welcome.

  1. Amazon is a really mixed bag. Probably because it’s huge. I know people who have hated it and quit after s few months and others who have been there 10-ish years.

With all your language skills, wouldn’t you be “wasted” in Amazon, speaking only one?

  2. Amazon is a great place to work just difficult to get in initially. Your technical background would suit roles such as Solutions Architect, Technical Program Manager or Software Development Engineer. I’m not sure which positions you’re looking into, but would be worth considering these roles I mentioned.

  3. Maybe you could elaborate a little bit on what you describe as toxic. Might be bad luck, but the reality is that private sector isn’t really comparable to public or academia.

  4. i know a few people that are engineers working at amazon in Lux and enjoy it, but we’re not close enough that they would tell me juicy details or that I could give you their contact information🤔
