Earlier this year, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said that America was going to “restore the warrior ethos” to the U.S. military.

In a recent news conference on the Iran war, Hegseth stated: “America is winning decisively, devastatingly, and without mercy. … Our radical Islamist Iranian adversaries … are toast, and they know it.”

In another speech, Hegseth added that there will be “no stupid rules of engagement, no nation-building quagmire, no democracy building exercise, no politically correct wars.”

While there is certainly a wide variety of opinions on the United States’ war with Iran, I believe that few Americans share the views expressed by Hegseth. Do we really want to be known as a country of warriors who mercilessly devastate our enemies? Have we left behind the goal of bringing peace to our difficult world?

So, what can we do? We can resist. We can write, call and email U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker and U.S. Sens. Dave McCormick and John Fetterman. Do it over and over.

We resist when we talk about this. We can talk about it at work. We can talk about it with our friends. We can talk about it with our children and our family.

We resist when we join in demonstrations to express the will of the people to reverse this harmful trend in America.
