Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor reportedly still doesn’t understand why he’s being punished for his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

According to royal expert Andrew Lownie, the former Duke of York’s arrest wasn’t enough to get him to understand his wrongdoing. “He thinks he’s anointed — that it’s deeply unfair people have turned on him,” the commentator told People.

Andrew was taken into custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office for allegedly giving Epstein information while serving as the U.K.’s trade envoy. In 2025, the 66-year-old was stripped of his titles and evicted from Royal Lodge.

“He [Andrew] has been pampered all his life, living in this bubble,” Lownie said. “Status is everything to him — it’s his only sense of identity. They thought they could operate like this unnoticed. They’re clearly deeply involved in exploiting their royal status.”

“They thought they’d be able to operate like this under the radar,” he added. “They’re clearly up to their necks in exploiting their royal status.”

Following Andrew’s arrest, King Charles III stated that The Firm will fully cooperate with the police. “I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office,” he explained.

“What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities,” His Majesty continued. “In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”

While Andrew is having a difficult time adjusting to his new reality, his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, are taking it even harder. Especially, as their mother, Sarah Ferguson, has also been banished from royal life.

“They’re [Beatrice and Eugenie] caught between a rock and a hard place over loyalty to their parents and their future,” Lownie told the publication.
