Any decent person can see it was a disgrace. They tear gassed & used batons against women & children queuing respectfully. They even put a wheel lock on a 80 year old womans wheelchair and left her until the game had finished. UEFA & the French police have a lot to answer for.
Fans, sadly, are not the primary concern for corporate events like the CL final. The Parisian military police teargassing crowds is grass roots though, ask the gilets jaunes.
Funny how Real didn’t have any issues
The whole thing seems like it was an absolute disaster. Combination of fake tickets (by the sounds of it) with some kind of IT failure leading to just a whole system breakdown. Which the French police them immediately went proper continental policing and took the easy approach and fucking tear gassed people.
Must admit UK policing is far from ideal, and aspects (like the Met) probably need completely rebuilding, but my god they don’t fuck it up as badly as the European coppers do. Even with questionable crowd control techniques like kettling, shit like tear gas isn’t even thought about in the UK (except for the usual NI use lol).
I’ve been hearing two sides to this:
– The fans threw bottles at police and tried to climb over fences. Fans without tickets tried to get in at the main entrances and when they couldn’t get in they blocked the entrances and had to be dispersed.
– Lots of the violence was actually instigated by locals, not Liverpool fans. Locals started provoking and attacking the police and security, resulting in the deployment of pepper spray and teargas, and many of the fans got caught in the middle. Security closed entrances to stop violent locals getting in, which also locked out a lot of Liverpool fans.
I’m probably leaning towards the second explanation, because:

Yes there were probably some morons amongst the Liverpool fans that were climbing on fences and throwing bottles, but these idiots were likely in the minority.
