So, I decided to try and learn what was that all about (I’m from a completely different European region, and I’ve never been in Macedonia or Bulgaria). Do I understand well that Bulgaria is blocking Macedonia’s access to the EU until Macedonians say they are actually all Bulgarians historically? It feels so petty when I read about it online, there must be more to it, right?
Edit: I am going to be donwvoted a lot I guess, but from these first reactions I am appalled. Their historians should not be fired by the government, there is academic independence and breaking that would set a horrible precedent. You guys say stuff like “being Macedonian is not a thing at all” or “there was never such a nation” etc. which sounds horrendous given the comparative recent history in Ukraine. They cannot say they are “not a real nation” for you, or teach that to their kids, because that would be like saying they shouldn’t be a country. I was hoping for some reasonable explanation of what is the request, and up to now I have only seen extreme nationalism that symbolically opposes the right to self-determination of peoples. Just /u/nidorancxo and /u/greencorsair seem to have a not aggressive speech as of now, but the majority of reactions I get make me think this is much more of a Bulgarian problem to fix than a Macedonian one. I’m very sorry if it sounds condescending from an outsider, but I am truly appalled. Just let them be, it’s like the right to abortion, let the women control their body… and let the countries control their national myth. Why do you care? Why would you feel threatened? *They* should feel threatened by your bigger country!
Edit2: You guys might be on the right side of things, I still don’t really know for sure as you’re not official representatives. But nobody here has articulated anything reasonable that Macedonia could do to appease Bulgaria. Finally, history is not a political topic (additional mini-edit: and people cannot steal history any more than they can return it).
