Every so often the idea of having a place to upload footage of dangerous drivers comes up on this subreddit, and I get to post links showing that Official Ireland/The Gardaí just don’t want the extra work. Their favourite excuse is that the public will fake the footage.
Here’s the latest usage of that excuse.
> She added the Department of Transport’s advice was that “any decision to allow film by members of the public to be used in evidence in road traffic cases would raise questions of reliability of, and possible tampering with, the apparatus used, as well as potential privacy” issues.
Cyclist here. Even if you go to the trouble of investing in cameras for your bike, dangerous driving will still happen and if you catch it on camera a very low number of those drivers will get a fine or penalty points
Lazy, careless cunts.
I swear do the garda even know what the point if their job is sometimes.
The first port of call is how can I make this not give me more work.
I get the shit court system makes their job way harder though.
I reported an 800 quid new bike being robbed from a lidl where cctv exists, I could see the look of ah stop wasting our time with this uninportant stuff on their faces.
I found the bike on donedeal (it was definitely mine, dame custom bottlecage) and asked them to go to the seller.
They sat on it for a week and by the time they did anything the seller had deleted their profile and the ad.
When shop I used to work in was robbed few years back, we weren’t allowed to use the crystal clear CCTV in the hearing in court cos the security lad who downloaded it for the guard had gone back home to Poland and the scrotes barrister objected over chain of custody issue with the CCTV. Case against yer man was ultimately dismissed as CCTV was pretty much the entire case. 17 months of adjournments for that!
If our great legal minds could pick holes in something as straight forward as that, I’d imagine they’ll have a field day with the online portal. They’d probably want the lad who sold you the camera in Dixon’s and the CEO of your ISP that you uploaded footage from in court or some such shite.
What does ‘driving dangerous to cyclists’ mean? As in to catch cyclists cycling dangerously or breaking the rules of the road?
Had video someone resnacked my car on my drive way. Thief look up camera had clearly he’s face recorded. Same nite about 30 cars was unlocked on the estate, cash and card where missing. After year got letter from guard they can’t catch thief. Heard that’s was young fellow from our estate. Guards are bunch of useless service only good for check point on sunny day
>However, cyclists who were presenting self-recorded video as proof of dangerous overtaking, for example, were encountering a very inconsistent attitude across the Garda force, Mr Cannon said. Some gardaí were very willing to take the videos and use them as evidence to impose fines and penalty points on drivers while other gardaí refused to use the videos in that way.
This is part of the problem. At the very least, there has to be a standard procedure in dealing with video evidence submitted by the public. Instead of the Superintendent or even the Gard in receipt making the determination.
To be fair, although there should be a general rule or standard practice for this kinda thing, I don’t think Gardai should accept videos from Joe Soap about road issues.

Especially in the case of overtaking cyclists. A lot of cameras have different focal lengths and lens shapes and an overtake can look a lot closer and more dangerous on a camera than it ever was in real life.

Similarly, I’ve had close calls (in my car) with other cars, where they pull out in front of me, for example, and I nearly end up sitting in their own car beside them, but on my dash cam it doesn’t look like it was that close at all.

They can be very misleading, and video is not hard to edit anymore. Anyone can do it.

(obviously if there’s actual physical contact between vehicles, cyclists, etc. it’s different).
This is not to say that some people cycling around like lunatics shouldn’t be prosecuted. I do a lot of driving and the amount of cyclists that don’t follow the rules of the road are about even. Red lights, give ways, pedestrian crossings and a whole lot of other shit. I hope that this if implemented would work both ways.
