ZAGREB, 14 March 2026 – Croatia has informed NATO about Serbia’s reported acquisition of a Chinese-made supersonic missile system after the weapon was recently observed mounted on a Serbian fighter aircraft.

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković confirmed on Friday that he briefed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about the development, describing the information as relevant for the alliance and its member states.

According to reports, the Serbian Armed Forces have been seen deploying the Chinese-made CM-400AKG air-to-surface missile, a supersonic quasi-ballistic missile with a range of at least 250 kilometres.

The missile was reportedly spotted in a pair mounted beneath a Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter jet operated by the Serbian Air Force.

The missile is designed as an air-to-surface weapon capable of striking high-value targets at long distances and high speeds.

Speaking earlier this week in Požega, Plenković said Croatia was closely monitoring developments but does not expect the weapon to be used against neighbouring countries, HRT reported.

“Croatia is a member of NATO and we are following the process that is taking place in Serbia,” Plenković said.

“In any case, we do not expect that the possession of such very serious weaponry could in any scenario be used against neighbouring countries, Croatia or any other.”

The Croatian prime minister also stressed that Croatia has been investing in strengthening its own defence capabilities in recent years as part of its commitments within the alliance.

Plenković noted that the missile system represents a type of weapon that had not previously been observed on European territory and highlighted that it originates from China.

The development has therefore been communicated to NATO leadership as part of Croatia’s regular security coordination within the alliance.
