Queen Maria II’s scathing Royal Decree making bullfighting illegal in Portugal back in 1836

  1. *Whereas bullfighting is barbaric entertainment, and improper of civilised Nations; and considering that such a spectacle solely serves to accustom men to a life of crime, and to savagery; and I, desiring to remove all causes that may impede, or delay the moral enhancement of the Portuguese Nation: I hereby Decree that, henceforth, all bullfighting spectacles are to be prohibited across the Kingdom. […]*

    1 year later, the law would be revoked due to popular discontent. Queen Maria II, not unlike her older brother across the Atlantic ([you may know the dude from here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8YRTHmtXUY)), was a bit of a strange event in Portuguese history (for this and other reasons), seemingly unfitting of the backwards country she ruled over, but it’s interesting to see that, 200 years ago, this supposedly very traditional thing was not that traditional for the Queen herself.

  2. “improprio de naçoes civili**s**adas” (improper of civilized nations) … and there you have a typo in a royal degree just there and someplace else.
