Boris Johnson waters down ethics code and blocks watchdog’s powers to investigate him

  1. This is, frankly, shocking in its transparent intent.

    > Previously it was expected that any minister who broke the code should offer their resignation.

    > But from today, the options open to the PM “where he retains confidence in the minister” will include “some form public apology, remedial action or removal of ministerial salary for a period.”

    > The policy statement announcing the changes read: “It is disproportionate to expect that any breach, however minor, should lead automatically to resignation or dismissal.”

Should we understand that Johnson, if found to have broken the code, can block his own forced resignation if he still has confidence in himself?

For anyone who values British democracy, it’s like watching the foundations of the building you’re sitting in wash away in real time.

  2. Can you imagine going back to early 2010 in the run up to the election and telling people what nightmare that wishy washy centre-right Cameron manifesto would lead to after 12 years…

  3. The Enabling Act

On the 23rd of March 1933, the Enabling Actwas passed by the Reichstag 441 votes to 94. This Act gave Hitler the right to make laws without the Reichstag’s approval for the next four years. Arguably this was the most critical event during this period. It gave Hitler absolute power to make laws, which enabled him to destroy all opposition to his rule.

The shift from the traditional legal system (the “normative state”) to the Nazis’ ideological mission (the “prerogative state”) enabled all of the subsequent acts of the Hitler regime, including its atrocities) to be performed “legally”. For this to succeed, the normative judicial system needed to be reworked; judges, lawyers and other civil servants acclimatized themselves to the new Nazi laws and personnel.

The judiciary lost its independence as it was increasingly controlled by the Nazis. Judges who didn’t sign up to become members of the National Socialist League for the Maintenance of Law were dismissed.

The overarching legal principle became Nazi “common sense”: “Whatever is good for Germany is legal.” The People’s Court(Volksgerichtshof) was created in 1934 for people accused of political crimes.

The combined effect of the two laws was to transform Hitler’s government into a legal dictatorship.

  4. The code has already been proven to be worthless over his tenure. At least he’s providing more evidence for his corruption.

  5. When you were sitting in history being taught about WW2 and all the things that happened did you ever sit and just think “how could all these events be allowed to happen?”

I did and I feel like I know the answer now.

  6. It’s pretty clear that allowing one party to have all the power is too disruptive and open to abuse.

We definitely need PR and permanent coalitions. It’s the only way to keep parties and PMs from overreaching.

  7. Literally all it takes is one cunt to ruin the entire system as we’ve seen with Putin and Trump, if you have no shame you can get away with anything. Still the PM has always been the person who applies the ministerial code so he can basically just say he did nothing wrong and carry on laughing at every single person in the country while he does it

  8. I am now going to stop calling people I don’t like a “cunt” and start calling them a “Boris”

Sorry to any nice Boris named people out there.

  9. “Boris Johnson has shot a man outside number ten downing street, but after the recent changes to ministerial code, it’s just boris innit?”

  10. This is up there with Mitch McConnell delaying Trump’s impeachment trial until after the transition and then refusing to impeach him because he’s no longer president. It’s the right wing asshats doing whatever possible to get away with their shit, putting themselves in a position where they retroactively get away with it. Johnson his hoping that in a few years people will have forgotten all this and all the people who voted for him because “He’S sUCh a lAd” will give him a pass.

  11. The only thing more disgusting than Tories and Boris in their voters. How can anyone actually want a dictatorship when one person can do whatever he wants… And the response still be “well labour would be worse”. What’s worse than a dictatorship?

  12. Goodbye democracy – hello never ending corrupt Tory rule with no accountability. The slow march towards Britain becoming a fascist state continues.

  13. It is really a dangerous development in British governance.

No real oversight or accountability apart form being supported by the PM

    License for corruption and incompetence.

  14. I tell you now we won’t have a fair election in the UK again. They’ll either fix it or claim that it was stolen ala Trump. The Conservatives literally cannot afford to be out of power. Worst part is the nation has lost the ability to functionally protest or riot a long time ago, too divided by petty issues, and so it’s just going to be a slow descent into a two tier society and an Eton dictatorship.

  15. This is outright fascism. This is changing the rules to suit whichever they’re breaking.

What rules to they change next? What rights do they take away next? What public service to they strip next?

It’s open, blatant corruption. No other government in the last 150 years – and certainly none within living memory – would sink to this level.

The Conservative Party is going to drag the country into the abyss.

  16. Bruh what the fuck. Why is nobody stopping this!? Surely there are some sort of powers that can effectively veto this decision?

Some fucking despot shit right here

  17. Late-stage Capitalism becomes early stage Fascism.

  18. I don’t use this word very often online, and I’m not being flippant or cheap when I accuse Johnson of being a scheming cunt lacking in the basic decency and accountability a person in his privileged position should have.

  19. YOU CAN’T CHANGE THE RULES AFTER YOU’VE ALREADY BROKEN THEM. THAT’S NOT HOW THIS WORKS. THAT’S NEVER HOW THAT WORKS. WHAT THE FUCK.

  20. There are Tory voters who understand how bad this is. There are Tory voters who have no idea. But none of them care. And all of them share the blame. Shame on Tory voters one and all.
