  1. How come the countries in the southern hemisphere are mostly accurate but the northern hemisphere countries are wildly distorted?

  2. I thought it was a case of European cartographers stuffing socks in their underpants but someone else pointed out that it’s the distance from the equator that causes the distortion.

  3. Java outnumbers Russia’s population by 3 million. And I bet most people here couldn’t pinpoint Java on the map.

  4. Even with the distortion of the Mercator projection accounted for, Ireland is in fact larger than Luxembourg, despite how some people in this country act.
