We’re witnessing the greatest transfer of wealth from poor to rich since the foundation of the state.

All ideas welcome guys and girls. We have lots of people with different backgrounds on r/Ireland who can contribute.

No-one has all the answers, but we might be able to brainstorm a plan of action between us!

My 2 cents; We need to get people out on the street. This starts with a groundswell of local organization.

A great first step would be to follow Novas the homeless charity on Facebook. Comment, share and like on every post that comes your way. Get your connections to do the same.

The more posts you engage with, the more posts the Facebook algorithm will send your way.

Building a grassroots movement is a slow and painstaking process. Keyboard warriors are desperately needed!

All other suggestions welcome…

EDIT: Yeah. There appears to be an over-representation of homeowners and landlords on this thread, from looking at some of the commenter’s profiles.

While I’m not saying their views aren’t welcome, the phrase ‘”you’re either part of the solution or you’re part of the problem” springs to mind.

Also, unless I’m very much mistaken, there appears to be some strategic down voting. Possibly from sock puppet accounts.

I’ve contacted the mods. I guess we’ll see what they think. Stay tuned.

NB: I looked at the profile of 3 ‘strategic’ commentors on this thread. 2 are homeowners and one seems to know an awful lot about being a landlord. (Not mentioning any names).

  1. This “greatest transfer of wealth” line gets trotted out for just about everything.

Your lack of an original script is the greatest asset to the real-estate owning aristocracy. 🤢

  2. Build more houses for rich people.

There is a shortage of houses for everyone, but if you’re rich you can afford to buy any overpriced thing and do it up / slum it. This pushes the middle out into not so well off areas, and that pushes the not so fortunate back into their nans spare room.

  3. At the end of the day, nations get the governments they deserve.

All the Irish do about the housing crisis is moan. No-one will lift a finger to change anything.

For those of us who can emigrate, it’s not a big deal. For those stuck here it most certainly is a big deal.

  4. This one seems so simple I must be missing something, but it seems all the offices that have been empty the last two years would be much better put to use as apartments for full time living, particularly in light of rising fuel prices – keeping those who can work at home off the roads and off commuting. I’m aware there would be work (= €) in converting work spaces to living spaces but so much less than if we are talking brand new builds.

  5. 1. Taxing REITS for a start. They are a plague worldwide. Why should a foreign investor get to buy property here and be exempt from tax. Tax REITS and ring fence the tax for building housing.
    2. Tax Incentives for downsizing , lots of empty nest boomers with 3 spare bedrooms in the burbs.
    3. Scale property tax on the number of properties owned by an individual or entity, discourage owning more than one property.
    4. Fast track CPO for derelict or idle property for repurposing as social housing and/or force the sale of idle property on the open market with due process if it is not being utilised.
    5. Reduce hap, this is a wealth transfer mechanism that is currently throwing petrol on the fire.
    6. Stop voting for Fine Fail and Fine Gael. They have deliberately created this disaster and have no intention of fixing it.

  6. Homes are now being bought by institutions – sorry, not just homes, but entire housing developments and sometimes before construction has completed – as investment vehicles, most likely to secure the bonds that governments will have to buy in the event of another recession. This combined with regular people trying to get their own ball rolling on owning multiple homes for the same purpose will result in an inevitable crunch one day, where the money is waiting for the houses to be built (we’re at that point)

Perhaps the Constitution should be amended and no home should be used for anything other than housing a family (or individual) who is exercising their right to own a home.
Maybe a line should be drawn between the right to own a home being mistaken for the right to pay for a roof over your head.

Building more houses when there’s a queue to buy them isn’t a full fix of the problem. Especially when that queue already has houses and are just looking for extras, for making money.

Nothing wrong with finding a nice investment to make a return on, but maybe the one thing we should block from that, is the one thing that ends being at the centre of the crises.

If you did something like that, prices would plummet as everyone dumps their forbidden holiday homes and airbnb businesses, but then those who need a home to live in, would fine one.
Would such a proposal be a denial of the freedom to own as many houses as you want? Or would it protect the other freedom where you should have a home to own? And also, who would regulate such a harsh shock to the system?

    ..with a pinch of salt.
It has felt like that for a while, with institutions vacuuming up entire developements in MANY countries. Its very aggressive and I’ve always personally felt that there was more to it than just turning a quick profit house flipping.
The underlying bonds and their yields from wrapping MBS up with CMBS is probably the real driver behind it…

But if that’s true then 2008 wont get a look in when it crashes, because the CMBS sector is still a rocking boat while everyone wants to work from home and we see things like “Global Food Crisis” in news headlines now.

Nobody in government is doing anything because nobody knows what to do. It’s not even our fault when economies are so intertwined on a global scale now. The world changes so fast these days that a student entering 1st year will have picked up mostly redundant skills by the time they hit college to earn that less relevant degree.
(Would love to rant about the education system, but sure we’ll leave that for another time)
Everything needs to be redesigned from the ground up, “but you cant change the tyres while the car is driving”
So all we seem to do is say “Ah sure..” and shrug.

I know fuck all about it all anyway, but its just my take on it :/
I’m just a doomer these days
