I was hoping to do a bday meetup with a few friends for after the lockdowns. Unfortunately a lot of them had a bail. Either busy with work, too sick or new jobs starting.
So, I was thinking I could either wallow in self pity alone or take the advice of Mr Bean and maybe enjoy the day by myself with my own company.
Some ideas were I could go to a spa. Go see a movie in imax.
What else could I do?

Could always go on a junkie safari down O’Connell Street?

Best site for events on, listed by day and each location is given so you can plan around if you like.
I used to love having a day in Dublin by myself, I’d usually look up this site and see if anything took my fancy and would work my day around it.
If not, I’d hit the IFI and pick a film. They often do free entry to special mini screenings, they’re normally about 30-60min.
They do this for EVERY DAY IN JUNE. FREE ENTRY to their Archive at Lunchtime screenings.
Here’s today’s-

Even if it’s something you know nothing about, it’s always worth checking out. Plus it can be fun to go into something like this blind. And it’s FREE so if it’s not your thing, the only thing you’ve lost is a bit of time.

I managed to get to an amazing Writer’s Workshop before lockdown, discussing Irish authors, focusing on Edna O’Brien, Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker. Totally free, just had to book the ticket on EventBrite. (Also good for finding free workshops, talks, demos, but the layout can be a bit crap depending on your device)
Also attended a really interesting talk on luxury fruit farming in Trinity College (avocado is super bad for the environment!) which sounds bleak but was actually very enlightening and fun.
Then I hit the Oriental Emporium at Jervis for some feckin cheap and delicious Asian food (they’ve removed the seating area but the food is worth taking away, I always buy an extra box to bring home)
.
Seriously, they do huge stuffed buns for €2, sweet bread sticks (like a giant soft churro) for €2 and you get 3 types of hot food of your choice and a box of sticky rice for about €8. The breadsticks are amazing, soft and fluffy and HUGE, one does two people!
Edit to clarify: it’s proper good food too, not just “Here’s three types of chicken” but really good food. Last time I got food from there, I got sticky pork belly with onions, crispy fried fish in mild chili batter, and slow cooked DUCK, which was honestly so good I was tempted to buy a box full of it just by itself.
My stepson got the peppered beef, the stirfried vegetables and the pork belly too (it’s our favourite)
We also got some buns and breadsticks. €20 even for the two of us. You’d pay more in a takeaway for substandard food!
That was all in one day, and the only thing it cost was the price of my food (and a Funko Pop that I had to have!)
Galleries, tours, Viking splash, trad music in some pub, a gig in the evening. Look up entertainment.ie for listings of what’s on and where
Do you live in Dublin or nearby? I would recommend Salt Cave Paradise in Dublin. Has a really nice and relaxing atmosphere.
The museum of literature is great, national gallery and archeological museum are cool and free, the Van Gogh experience is on in the rds at the moment, going next Monday all alone, I love being alone, you can take as long as you want to appreciate something or leave it you’re not enjoying it!
Be a tourist for a day and get one of the hop on hop off tickets and just let it bring you to all the Dublin tourist attractions.
Do the viking splash tour!
The Chester Beaty, the National Gallery, Museum, The Dead Museum, Botanical Gardens. All good for a wander.
Kilmainham gaol is pretty cool
Fishing in the sea on the canal or on the dodder.
Hike part or all of the Dublin Mountain Way
The botanical gardens in Glasnevin are stunning. Hooe you have a nice day whatever you decide to do
