Yeah cyclists are always killing people on the roads sure.
Oof. Very subtle finger to all the cyclists of Ireland there.
My question about cyclists is, why are they always so angry??
Any time I’ve said anything to a cyclists, they pretty much explode at me. The best example was when I was out for a run and a group of MAMILs were blocking a path when they could have moved like 5 meters down the path and not blocked anything. I said they could move and these middle aged men started shouting swear words at me… And kept going as I continued my run.
And that’s just one example! I have loads more!
Edit: I see by the downvotes that the cyclists are angry here too! 😂
Absolutely! And fuck all the motorists at roundabouts who forget to yield to their right!
Particular compliments to those that DON’T RIDE ON THE SIDEWALKS.
You are appreciated.
Just gonna float these out there before the inevitable circlejerk…
**Studies concluding that cyclists break fewer traffic laws than drivers:**
It’s actually pretty impressive how car culture has normalized infractions like speeding, tailgating, double parking, rolling stops, parking in bike/fire lanes, failure to signal, failure to overtake safely, stopping/standing in crosswalks, “fender benders”, parking on sidewalks, etc. etc. while simultaneously creating a confirmation bias toward “scofflaw cyclists”. Depressing as fuck, but impressive nonetheless.
*Edit:* also thanks for the blessing, and the same to all the other road users, especially the ones who know how to use roundabouts (I’m in the US, there are maybe like 15 of us).
Are cyclists supposed to cycle on a footpath? I always see people doing it and I knew someone who cycled on a footpath a while back and got shouted at by a driver for doing so.
Also no I don’t cycle. I’ve been wanting to get into it (with the cost of petrol and vehicle prices plus it would be great exercise) but I definitely need to know the rules for cycling on a road first
Thankfully car drivers never break the rules or we’d be in a really bad place.
As a pedestrian I can say that both cyclists and drivers are all wankers
Yes so do I.
I could safely say 80% of cyclists I’ve seen will plow through zebra crossings and traffic lights for pedestrians without a care in the world. And i would estimate about 10% of cars. As a pedestrian i have had infinitely more close calls with cyclists than cars.
never realized that was a thing. used to cycle round as a kid and would get insults hurled at me from drivers. probably why then..
I wish Ireland was more like Amsterdam, they’ve got the right idea.
Ive seen our drivers, no way in fuck im doing anything dodgy to get somewhere faster, id rather not be bisected by some lads bonnet,
Cycling for a year and the conclusion I’ve come to is everyone has a lack of patience on the roads.
And I wish there were actual cycle paths.
Not gonna lie, as a cyclist, using roundabouts is one of the most terrifying experiences you can have on the road.
You know motorists break road rules far more than cyclists, right?
It’s just that motorists don’t regard what they do as rule breaking. Everyone nips through the light as it’s turning red or does 55 down the main road after all.
let me fix this:
everyone who uses the damn road, FFS YOU RAN A DAMN RED LIGHT YA DAMN TRUCK DRIVER, YOU ALMOST FUCKIN HIT SOMEBODY
Was in a taxi recently and while stopped at a red light, the driver was giving out that none of the cyclists who had stopped were breaking it.
He was advocating that if some of them moved off, there would be better flow of traffic when the lights turned green?
I’m a cyclist and would obey the rules of the road nearly religiously, but with more and more people breaking lights constantly, I do see some benefit in this approach. So long as cyclists are cautious, considered and prioritise pedestrians, I’d support it.
Separately! Would also like to see more garda on bikes and fining the absolute arsehole on bikes on the road!
I skip most red lights and I will tell you why:
Most places don’t have a dedicated green light for cyclists to allow us to get a headstart and switch lanes. Traffic in Dublin is insane and changing lanes with a Dublin bus 3 meters tall that looks like a fucking wall blocking all visibility plus all the other cars is insanity. I almost got hit once already trying to do just that.
Bikes are forced to share the road with cars in too many places and we simply a) can’t accelerate as fast and b) weight 80kg compared to a 2 ton average car.
The solution is not to blame cyclists but to improve the infrastructure like other cities (e.g. Amsterdam) did.
Why so many “cyclists better know there place” posts? What is this, an American car subreddit? Is anyone here of the opinion that cars and car-centred infrastructure are generally the biggest problems when it comes to urban planning and transportation issues?
Fuck this. The State of cycling infrastructure in the country is a joke and the until that ends you can fuck right off with the bullshit.
I think before anyone starts going on about other road users, they should re-read the rules of the road (all of them) and ask themselves if they have broken any of those rules. Regardless of your “reasons”, chances are you probably have at some point. So everyone should just accept responsibility for their own behaviour, try to correct their errors and stop pointing fingers. The world needs a bit more self-awareness.
If I’m on a bicycle there is no point in me stopping at a red light if I’m not crossing any road (such as when turning left or cycling on the long side of a T-junction).
98% of cars in 30 kph zones are breaking the limit.
Seriously, find me any group of people that breaks the law more frequently than drivers.
Feels oddly specific to be singling out cyclists who obey the laws (or don’t), considering how few people cycle in Ireland, and the staggeringly high number of car drivers who don’t obey the law.
I generally see at least one person breaking the traffic laws every time I go out. Running red lights, driving on the footpath, and speeding are the most common. They’re also far more likely to kill someone (especially someone other than the driver) than anything a cyclist can do.
Zero enforcement or penalties, and everyone just treats it like it’s normal.
I wonder if this is in reference to cyclists staying in the outside lane going around. It’s recommended for safety. I had someone once beep their horn at me because he thought I was in the wrong. It’s in the Highway Code, in NI anyway. Too many motorists need to sit/resit the theory test.
‘Cyclists, horse riders and horse drawn vehicles may stay in the left-hand lane when they intend to continue across or around the roundabout and should signal right to show you they are not leaving the roundabout. Drivers should take extra care when entering a roundabout to ensure that they do not cut across cyclists, horse riders or horse drawn vehicles in the left-hand lane, who are continuing around the roundabout.’
This is the type of thing I expect to see some auld fella to post on facebook.
If as a driver you want to be less annoyed by cyclists, then demand better cycling infrastructure.
