Tell me you run a dodgy operation without telling me you run a dodgy operation

  1. The Mcdonald’s nearby suspiciously only accepts cash after a certain hour claiming “their system is down” and also suspiciously your total comes out to an exact dollar amount.

  2. Haha!! For feck sake like..in this day and age, only accepting cash is basically screaming to be investigated by the tax man

  3. Possibly failed one of several things with their provider. PCI compliance, KYC audit or have revenue issues.

If you ever see cash only, just ask questions whether this is well run or not.

  4. Unless it’s a new business, they will have paid a certain level of tax consistently for years and have a record of that, so a dramatic decline declared would be noticed, so it’s not for that reason.

Dodgy businesses launder money and like paying taxes to legitimise it.

This is more likely card fraud or disputed payment issues reoccurring. But go ahead jump to conclusions.

  5. I live in a small town ( pop. 4,000 ) in NE Pennsylvania, USA. A lot of small businesses have started using “cash only” transactions because the price of having a credit card machine has risen so much it is eating up their profits.

  6. Isn’t legal, right? In my country, if the shop doesn’t allow you to pay with a card, the police make a fine to them immediately.

  7. I find this so strange, even with things like Revolut where it only takes a minute to transfer money.

Like I was in a sawmill, in the middle of nowhere, the other day. It was just a big shed with a loaf of timber, not even a building for staff and yet it had a card machine.

  8. My local Chinese has recently started doing this, a few more Chinese people have recently showed up working in the place too. Seems a bit odd. Someone above mentioned something about money laundering etc

  9. If you’re going to buy weed and coke off your local gangsters, it’s the least you can do to help them launder their cash.

  10. Is that parking at Coombe hospital? After gf gave birth I had to sleep in my car until morning so I could go to atm inside Spar and pay for my parking. You would think place that operates 24/7 and has people going in and out during the night would accept cards but nope.

  11. Seen it in a few pubs and other businesses, I think the companies charge a fortune to use thier services that might be why

  13. A place in my home town, a nicer fish and chip place, pricey enough, not like a dirty chipper, been caught for tax evasion more than once and “shockingly” enough still don’t have a card machine in 2022. They only opened around 2015ish so it’s not like it’s an old place that never updated.

  14. Hard to say if this is intentionally just to dodge the tax. Like if they’re 100% going to be accepting cash, surely they know wouldn’t get away with that as Revenue will know you’re still trading and aren’t going to accept that you’re taking in ZERO revenue.

  15. There’s a pizza restaurant in Donegal that does this. But not going to name them as the food is awesome. Place is jammers.

  16. Most Chinese takeaways don’t have card machines, it’s mad how the taxman hasn’t copped onto these places.

  17. Counterpoint to all the people shouting money laundering

Card processing fees are a fucking rip off.

  18. One of the local spots here in my village never facilitated card payments and in post covid it’s a bit mad. In the last few weeks they’ve gone as far as installing a ATM outside the pub instead of just getting a card machine in! Not sketchy at all
