Second Lady Usha Vance brought out her St. Patrick’s Day best as she and Vice President JD Vance welcomed Irish officials to the naval observatory on Tuesday, March 17, but even a muted green dress didn’t stop commentary slamming them for the move, which comes as the war in Iran enters its third week.

Vance, who is currently expecting her fourth child, were on hand to welcome the Irish leader, Micheál Martin, for a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast, a tradition that they also embraced during their first year in office in 2025.

However, not long after the Vice President was also slammed as a “loser” after making a “seriously awkward” confession about his wife, and they both faced ridicule for their appearance at the event.

As they posed, with Usha opting for a moss-green dress that covered her baby bump paired with a black blazer, the pair were quickly slammed for seeming to imply everything was fine and normal, while the war continues to wage in the Middle East.

“Man, what a pathetic circus this is,” one person said on X (formerly Twitter).

“JD Vance and his wife rolling out the red carpet for the Irish Taoiseach on St. Patrick’s Day, they’re some kind of diplomatic heroes–while the same administration is still bombing Iranian civilians, turning schools into graveyards, poisoning cities with toxic fallout, and spiking global oil past $112 a barrel,” they continued.

“Millions around the world are losing jobs, skipping meals, and shutting down economies one day a week because of this endless war Trump started–and these clowns are smiling for the cameras pretending everything is grand,” they added. “This isn’t diplomacy. This is elite theater while real people pay the price for your failed empire games.”

“The hypocrisy stinks from a mile away.”

The event also sparked another viral moment when the vice president delivered remarks.

He recalled that he thought the president would “bust my chops” after he wore shamrock socks following Trump’s focus on them the year before.

“I did that knowing that when we met the president later with the Taoiseach at the Oval Office, I’d be sitting down he’d see my socks and would bust my chops about the fact that I was not wearing boring black socks, I was wearing these bright white shamrock socks,” he said, noting that this year, he opted for “slightly more muted” shamrock socks.

During the 2025 event, Trump noticeably stopped in his tracks to comment on Vance’s socks, stopping a discussion about inflation to tell his vice president he was intrigued by the shamrock-inspired clothing choice.

“What’s with these socks?” Trump asked at the time.

Vance explained his choice was in honor of the Irish prime minister, but the president was unable to take his attention off of them.

“I’m trying to stay focused, but I’m very impressed with the VP’s socks,” he said.
