Dear Lord, please grant me the confidence of a historically illiterate Englishman.

  1. How dumb can someone be? They literally are responsible for the deaths of millions and the almost complete annihilation of a culture and language. It’s really disgusting how a human being could be this dumb yet still want to reply like this

  2. I mean he very clearly hasn’t a notion of what he’s talking about but he sort of has a basic grasp of the fact that the brits were invited over initially rather than just waltzing in uninvited

  3. Technically he’s correct /s

The King of Ireland (George III of Hannover) asked the King of a Britain (George III of Hannover) to join after they’d spend a few years colonising the place.

  4. I assume this is referring to Diarmait MacMurrough who invited the Anglo-Normans over in 1167 to reclaim his throne.

  5. Well since the British monarch was King of Ireland after Henry VIII, I suppose he isn’t technically wrong when he says the “King of Ireland” asked for it!

  6. Dafuq. Even the rest of it doesn’t make sense. Act of Union with Ireland occured 97 years after the other Act of Union with Scotland.

Act of Union with Scotland occured because they went broke particular with their own failed attempts at empire in Panama.

Act of Union with Ireland occured because the Protestant Ascendancy had lost their grip on it (being that you basically had to be a male member of the landed gentry in order to have any say in how the Kingdom of Ireland was governed) and it led to the revolution of 1798.

Ireland was the first British colony. Pure and simple. Any denial of this is so silly.

  7. When dealing with shit like this it’s always good to contrast what the fascist’s words “mean” vs. what they “do”. Is George really making a good-faith historical argument, or is he just making an assertion that *if it were true* would reinforce his pre-existing beliefs about british imperialism and the humanity of Irish people?

To put it another way, George is giving permission to colonialism- he supports it. If you were to argue the historical accuracy of his claim you would just be legitimizing it as “genuine discourse” while he plays word games.

Violence is the only language that fascism understands. You ought to either ignore them entirely or oppose them physically. You can’t make a case for your own humanity to someone who has a priori decided that you aren’t human.

  8. I mean.. By some weird logic he could say because George III was held Kingship of Ireland separately before the Union..

But I’m pretty sure if I remember correctly George III didn’t give much of damn about Ireland being joined into the one state, that was just William Pitt trying to get rid of French support in Ireland.

So I mean it wasn’t at his request.. and I haven’t a clue what the Scots have to do with anything.. mhm the English Twitter people really aren’t worth the effort trying to understand…

  9. I got to read a really really old English kid’s history book. It said something along the lines of

“Irish King’s were always waring among themselves, so they invited the English king to come and be King over all of them so they could have peace”

    Twisted, sickening stuff.
