[I’ve heard on youtube that carrying guns in public is not a element of maltese law](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZLugT25jXM)

does that mean one can carry guns in public as long as they have a license for it?

  1. No, carry is prohibited. You’ll get arrested whether or not you have a license. Guns are only allowed in licensed gun ranges.

  2. Lolno. Guns need to be secured and concealed when being transported from one place to another (for example from your home to the shooting range), and even then you can technically get in trouble if you don’t directly go from the location where the gun is registered to your destination (no home > lidl > shooting range).

If things haven’t drastically changed, you’ll need to join a gun club to get licensed. They’ll explain all relevant rules if you’re interested.

  3. I’m sorry if I’m asking a stupid question. But hunters carry their rifles everywhere and shoot almost everywhere which is not a licensed range. So is the entire sport illegal?

  4. IIRC gun laws haven’t been changed since 2019 when that video was posted, but I am admittedly not up to date.

As for carrying in public, it is illegal. There is no concealed carry or anything like that here. You mentioned hunters, and yeah that’s a different exception (they always have exceptions unfortunately). I think that exception is also there because rifles are much more obvious and visible than handguns. And even then, I believe they are only allowed to do so during hunting season.

When you go to a gun range, the gun in your car must be unleaded and stored in a different case and location than the ammo. I also believe you can’t even have store the gun in the front of your car even if it is unloaded. Basically by law you are only allowed to carry a gun in your car when you’re going to and from a gun range. There is a roughly 1 hour timeframe which comes into affect after the last gun range closes each day which is there to allow you enough time to get home, so if you are stopped by a police officer you have the rationale that you are on your way home from the range. Note that if you are stopped by police after this time and they find the gun on you, you are at risk of having it and/or your firearms license confiscated.

You **cannot** take a weapon like that on any public transport. Even besides the law, regulations for public transport already make carrying weapons on them illegal and trust me if you are found with it, even if you are storing the gun and the ammo separately, you are at risk of ending up in a lot more shit.

I am not a gun owner though, I have friends who are and they told me about those laws but your best bet is directly contacting a firearms club or MATSAC as that other person suggested. And always remember the basic principles of firearm handling and stay safe 🙂
