COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Prisma Health announced Thursday that the medical group would officially be partnering with the University of South Carolina to operate the university’s new Brain Health Center.
USC held a ribbon-cutting on Wednesday to celebrate the opening of the center, located near Prisma Health’s Richland Hospital, later this spring.
The center is expected to house new treatments, like infusion therapies and advanced technologies, including the state’s first 7-Tesla MRI scanner, for those suffering from various neurological disorders such as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s disease, among others.
The partnership will allow USC and Prisma to co-manage the clinical services and academic programs delivered at the center.
“Supporting brain health is fundamental to preserving the essential capacities that allow individuals to lead meaningful lives, contribute productively to society, and adapt in a rapidly changing world,” Dr. Tony Asher, president of the Prisma Health Neurosciences Institute, said in a statement. “I’m tremendously excited to work with our partners at USC to promote vitality and resilience in the communities we together serve by protecting and—whenever possible—enhancing brain and neurological health.”
In addition to treatments and therapies, the center will offer lifestyle programs to help prevent cognitive diseases and support for families and caregivers.
Students at USC will also be able to participate in research and special training opportunities.
“We’re proud to partner with Prisma Health to bring world-class care to South Carolinians with complex neurological conditions,” Sarah Kirby, associate vice president for clinical affairs at USC, said in a statement. “Working together, we will improve diagnoses, make groundbreaking treatments available to patients and provide much-needed support to families caring for loved ones.”
The Brain Health Center is part of USC’s Brain Health Network which provides screenings and other support services for seven underserved areas in South Carolina.
