  1. >It is now crucial for Europe to go back to what was agreed. [We have to] once again solidify our fundamental position, which we have so carefully protected since last year’s stolen election, that [Lukashenko] is an illegitimate president with whom Europe does not negotiate,” Landsbergis said.

    >Europe makes legitimate and just demands: to release political prisoners, organise new elections, end the hybrid attack,” he added. “Failure to meet these demands leads to economic, financial and other sanctions.”

Interesting, but why is this approach reserved for Belarus.

Is Xi legitimate and China democratic? Yet I don’t see any calls not to talk to them. Same for a bunch of countries.

Hypocritical bullies hiding behind values they apply selectively.

  2. If the EU eases any of the currently placed sanctions, then its basically game over for the European union common international politics policy.

Does Merkel or any other EU leader need to be reminded, that first set of sanctions were placed after undemocratic elections and violent crackdown?

Or that the second set of sanctions were placed after Luka decided that its okay to threaten to shoot civilian planes carrying EU citizens, then kidnap the same plane just to arrest a political dissident?

Honestly, if any of the sanctions will be removed, then once the next migrant crisis happens on Belarusian border (and it will happen), all neighboring countries should just gather the migrants and buy them bus tickets to whichever country voted to remove sanctions. There is no point in dealing with the migrants ourselves if thats the EU policy, especially if their goal is not Lithuania or Poland.

  3. If this works, Poland may also use blackmail by migrants against Germany. LOT brings in migrants from Iraq and Syria, then takes them to the German border by bus and demands payments from the EU budget to Poland. Hungary could start carrying migrants by WizzAir.

  4. Merkel is going for that “peace in our time” play. But unless the talks go through Borrell, not all parties are being represented right now. Lithuania would prefer to use the language of force. To appease and accommodate terrorists creates bad incentives for their future behaviour, they will now feel even more emboldened or even invincible, which could lead to them making incorrect calculations as they prepare for future escalations against us. We will be the ones to pay for any mistakes being made now, so our voices should matter.

You guys have to trust us on this one, we crawled out of the same godforsaken hellhole as Belarus and thus intimately understand how they think and what will and will not work against them. The bayonet stops when it meets bone. You can only get blackmailed if you agree to it, and Poland and Lithuania have firmly rejected this. The [walls are already rising](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=er0cFy3aPow) and soon this new tool of Lukashenka’s will be exhausted, so the feeling is that there’s nothing to show weakness and make concessions over *now*, because we already dealt with this one episode of the series. But should we ever stumble in our stance, use additional sanctions against them on our behalf and in our loving memory, not accommodation of their demands.

  5. So Lithuania is a political nun? Or a political virgin? True, the achievement is of little use. Only for farming positive karma on reddit.
