This battle was on the worst events during the break up of Jugoslavia.
I do really hope that one day Serbs and Croats will be able to live together in harmony in Vukovar.
5000 people with only light arms, small amounts of ammunition against 50000 soldiers of the 4th largest army in Europe. They held their position for 2 months. The battle was a modern day Stalingrad. Croatians were always, throughout the history, the best soldiers. Napoleon Bonaparte said this after the cathastrophic crossing of the river Berezina in Russia, in which he barely survived, thanks to the small group of Croatian soldiers: „Give me 100000 Croatian soldiers and with them, I will conquer the world”. The sheer bravery of Croatian soldiers throughout history can only be compared by the bravery of the Poles.
Sadly, this wasn’t only about warfare. This was about the struggle of the innocent people. Hospital was bombed every day, on purpose. When Vukovar fell, Chetniks entered the hospital. They took some 260 people, and went to Ovčara farm. There, they killed all of them. This was the biggest masacre in Europe after the end of WW2. The number of total casualties is at around 10000 soldiers (all sides), and 1000 civilians.
Never heard of this. Interesting.
May we remember our mistakes and do better
There’s a fantastic 6 part BBC docuseries on [the breakup of Yugoslavia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_of_Yugoslavia) made in 1995/6 that I highly recommend to anyone remotely interested in the subject.
