King Charles III‘s relationship with brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is “beyond repair,” according to a royals expert, Wonderwall.com can report.
The cancer-stricken monarch’s bond with the former Duke of York is now so strained, it’s unlikely Charles, 77, and Andrew, 66, will ever be seen together in public again, even at family Christmases at Sandringham, a new report suggests.
On the growing resentment between the brothers, royal biographer Andrew Lownie told HELLO!, “I don’t think we’ll see Andrew at Charles’ funeral.”
Lownie explained that as bad as things are now in the wake of Mountbatten-Windsor’s February arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office, tensions between the brothers existed long before the ex-royal ever associated with predator Jeffrey Epstein, sparking his public downfall.
Mutual resentment
There has been tension between King Charles III and brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor for decades, according to a royal biographer. By: MEGA
“Andrew resented Charles. He felt that he could do a better job. Charles resented Andrew. He felt that Andrew was allowed to do things he couldn’t do,” explained Lownie, a historian who wrote the 2025 book Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York.
One source of friction was that Mountbatten-Windsor was allowed to fly missions in the Falklands War while Charles was kept away from naval combat.
On top of that, “Andrew is not a forgiving type. He feels that Charles has thrown his family under a bus to cover the problem,” Lownie added.
Author Robert Jobson, who wrote 2025’s The Windsor Legacy: A Royal Dynasty of Secrets, Scandal and Survival, told HELLO! the king feels betrayed by revelations from the Epstein files.
“In around 2013 or 2014, Charles and Andrew had a massive conversation about Epstein, and Andrew gave [Charles] his complete and utter assurance that he had done nothing wrong,” Jobson said. “He gave unequivocal reassurances.”
Taking away his titles
King Charles III suspected there was more to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s Jeffrey Epstein ties than his brother claimed, according to former palace butler Grant Harrold. By: MEGA
Charles and Andrew have not been seen together in public since the funeral of the Duchess of Kent in September 2025, where they hardly interacted.
Andrew’s attempts to engage Prince William at the funeral were met with stiff nods.
Charles officially stripped Andrew of his royal titles in late 2025, removing “Prince,” “Duke of York” and “His Royal Highness.”
According to the king’s former butler Grant Harrold, Charles was prepared to take away the titles even earlier because of a suspicion that something was wrong.
“I don’t remember the king ever being particularly close to Prince Andrew. The royal household always knows what’s coming. I think the king probably had an inkling that something was wrong,” Harrold said.
“That’s why the king took such drastic measures and removed his titles” last year, he added.
Royal exile
King Charles III “does not want Andrew [Mountbatten-Windsor] to be seen in public for the rest of his life,” a palace source claimed. By: MEGA
In recent months, Charles erected new layers of security around Marsh Farm on his privately owned Sandringham estate in England’s Norfolk region, which will be his brother’s new home as soon as renovations are completed later this spring.
Mountbatten-Windsor has been staying at nearby Wood Farm in the meantime following his eviction from Royal Lodge, the Crown Estate mansion he called home for more than 20 years, in the wake of the growing scandal.
The former Duke of York’s secure and low-key life in Sandringham is part of what aides describe as a determined effort to shield the monarchy from further public scrutiny.
It’s all part of a plan to keep Mountbatten-Windsor out of sight for the rest of his life — unless he ends up in court.
“The king is absolutely determined that this situation does not spiral into a rolling media drama. From his perspective, the last thing the institution needs is a steady stream of photographs or daily commentary centered on Andrew’s movements,” a palace source said.
“The strategy is to reduce exposure at every level, limiting sight lines, restricting access and preventing the property from becoming a backdrop for long-lens cameras.
“There is a conscious effort to separate the constitutional role of the monarch from the personal legal difficulties of a relative,” the source continued.
“The king’s team is focused on reinforcing that distinction. Public engagements, state matters and charitable work must not be overshadowed by the private circumstances of one family member.
“Drawing a visible and practical line between those spheres is seen as essential to protecting the stability and credibility of the crown. Plus Charles would at this point rather Andrew is not seen in public for the rest of his life.”
