Police in Rome are investigating a shooting that left a child injured after gunfire erupted in a home Thursday evening.

According to an incident report from the Rome Police Department, officers were called to a residence on Superba Avenue in North Rome after multiple shots were fired into the house. A juvenile inside the home was struck in the shoulder.

Authorities say members of the Rome-Floyd Task Force were in the area at the time, carrying out a separate search warrant, when they heard a rapid burst of gunfire, estimated to be around 30 shots.

One of the first responding officers entered the home and found the injured child in the kitchen. The officer immediately began administering aid while reassuring the victim before emergency medical services arrived. The child was later transported to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators reported finding numerous shell casings of different calibers scattered along the roadway near Clervue Circle. Several bullets also struck the home, damaging the front and left side, with at least one round passing through a window near the front door.

Surveillance footage from nearby businesses captured an SUV leaving the North Avenue area around the time of the shooting. Police later stopped a vehicle matching that description, but determined the driver was not connected to the incident.

At the time of the shooting, four juveniles between the ages of 8 and 14 were inside the home. Aside from the injured child, no other injuries were reported.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine who was responsible for the gunfire.
