Latvian Television’s ‘Latvian Code’ (Latvijas kods) documentary strand offers a kaleidoscopic picture of life in modern Latvia, and comes complete with English-language subtitles.

The latest offering is titled ‘Though the Eyes of a Child’ (Caur bērna acīm).

When Gerda was two years old, her parents left her in Latvia while they went to Ireland to work. These experiences and memories still haunt Gerda, so she is looking for young people with similar childhood experiences to share, listen to, and gain the courage to talk to their parents about a time that has irreversibly affected their lives. The film shows a significant social problem – children of the economic crisis who grew up without their parents, their emotional experiences and traumas, which now affect their adult lives.

The film received the prestigious “Lielais Kristaps” award for “Best Short Documentary Film”.
