  1. Buried in the article text is this too:

    > The actor’s legal costs for making the unsuccessful bid came to £116,314.55, according to court documents.

So even before the case is heard he’s having to fork out ~£152,000 for a failed attempt to try to get a jury trial.

  2. Well he’s hoping this finally knocks some sense back into him.

You seriously have to wonder at this point if their is something mentally wrong with him. He pretty much changed overnight.

  3. The speech is free, but it comes with expensive consequences if you lie about people.

*Well maybe not that expensive to Fox who is somehow worth north an £1.2M

  4. Funny ain’t he that our legal system will actually make someone pay for defamation but america actively let trump get away with that for years and are still letting him get away.

Now if only our justice system would get boris who broke his own fucking rules and who knows how many more.

  5. Get ready for the grifting from Laurence. The “I’m being silenced podcast” coming to Spotify YouTube and ITunes. Remember to buy my vitamins. please PLEASE Barry the recovery officer has my Chaise longue.

  6. Didn’t this happen to someone else and was it Elon Musk? I don’t think he had to pay any court bills though, he just looked a fool.

  7. This the little sludge puddle who said he couldn’t get vaccinated due to fear of needles whilst also having a bunch of tattoos?

  8. Ahh you just love it. After all the faux big dick energy on free speech is dissipated on twitter the real world comes in & still to this day… grown men in their 40s are learning what most toddlers learn; you can say what you want but there are consequences.

Edit: I’m sure his album sales will more than cover the cost of this, including the court costs.

  9. Families struggling to heat their homes and eat filling meals.

Meanwhile the patriotic right have tens of thousands of pounds to blow on moronic court cases because they can’t just not be cunts in a public space.

  10. I don’t want to get into the right wing Vs left wing cesspool debate here. But I have a related question.

When these stories make the news (or Reddit) it tends to be about alt. right characters like Katie Hopkins or Laurence Fox. Is this just based on their unpopularity on Reddit that I see those stories or is it only really the alt right characters like this who get fines for libel?

  11. It was dumb to even seek a trial on this, let alone jury trial. The [tweet about Ms Thorp](https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article22792143.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_Laurence-Fox.jpg) literally says that people should not employ her because she is “unequivocally, publicly and undeniably a paedophile “.

I cannot think of a more clearcut case of a false factual statement meant to harm a person’s reputation. It uses two words to stress that it is meant as a factual statement and is addressed to employers, so financial harm is not a possible consequence, it is the intended effect.

The [tweet about Mr Blake](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/laurence-fox-urged-delete-twitter-22791774.amp) contains no effort at humour, sarcasm or any other rhetorical device. It just states that it’s surprising he holds a certain opinion because he is a paedophile. The [tweet about Crystal](https://www.google.com/amp/s/ph.news.yahoo.com/amphtml/drag-race-uks-crystal-suing-104700316.html) is similarly brief.

I’m really not sure what the planned defence might be. I have my suspicions that Fox simply cannot afford to settle the cases so he *has* to push on and hope against hope he wins.

  12. Following in the footsteps of fellow limp provocateur turned bankrupt Hopkins, what a wonderful career path

  13. How long until we see a GoFundMe page for his legal fees? His libel bills are going to cost him dear at this rate.
