Eoghan Harris was “silenced” when he was fired for abusing people with a fake Twitter account, according to TD Charlie Flanagan.

  1. Yeah Harris is a plonker but tbf Charlie literally says “agree or disagree”, just that the article
    Is worth a read.

Edit: the first paras from Harris’s wiki page. What an absolute wildcard:

“In the 1990s, he left the Workers’ Party and was a short-lived adviser to Fine Gael leader John Bruton, before Bruton became Taoiseach; then an adviser to the Ulster Unionist Party. In the 2000s he supported the Fianna Fáil-led government of Bertie Ahern. Ahern nominated him to Seanad Éireann in 2007, where he served until 2011.[1] He also continued producing some documentary programmes for RTÉ.

Harris was a columnist for the Sunday Independent until 2021. He was sacked after admitting running a fake Twitter account,[2] which harassed journalists he believed were sympathetic to Irish nationalism and Sinn Féin.[3]

Harris is also noted for his screenwriting work. He lectures at IADT Dún Laoghaire and teaches a screenwriting workshop.”

  2. FG’s Tanagan supporting right wing unionist Harris should come as no surprise.

Harris abused and trolled the fuck out of mostly women and used both the Taoiseach and the Irish media to spout his sectarian, racist and misogynistic views.

Absolute disgusting scumbag but I’m not shocked at all that a loyalist sympathiser like Tanagan supports him. Disgusting that FG still allow these old scummy dirtbags in their party.

  3. The article describes Harris like this:

    > Free societies need people like Eoghan Harris—courageous contrarians who defy the culture of amnesia.

And one of the people he abused, Irish Examiner political correspondent Aoife Grace Moore spoke about his ‘courageous tweets’:

“This account sent me sexualised messages about whether Mary Lou McDonald ‘turned me on’, the size of my arse and called me a terrorist from the month I started at the Examiner. Since then, I’ve had to go to counselling and the guards,”

Conservatives really do live in a different world from decent people.

  4. Worth remembering why Charlie Flanagan might instinctively support a far-Right Unionist thug: he didn’t just spontaneously germinate. He was brought up by a fascist father who used to give speeches _in the actual Dáil_ about how “where the bees are there is the honey and where the Jews are there is the money”.

This is not a normal party.

  5. Amnesia? The worst amnesia in this country is about the terrorism of the UVF 1912-14 who broke the democratic decision and will of the British parliament and the voters of the entire island, fomented mutiny in the British army and followed that up in 1918 by defeating the democratic will of the entire people of the island and then gerrymandered a toxic statelet into existence. Quite frankly Flanagan is a unionist. Let’s hear him denounce the UVF Unionism and Toryism for the next 20 years. Will we? No. Because Fine Gael is a unionist party.

  6. Just to mention, he actually didn’t get fired for abusing people on twitter, he didn’t face any consequences for that. He was fired for sharing confidential information shared with him by his employer using anonymous Twitter accounts, a clear and indisputable breach of his contract. Harris was never sanctioned in any way for all the years of lying and abusing people in his articles and on social media, his freedom of speech has been protected more rigorously than virtually any other ‘journalist’ in our country’s history, and the fact that he still has Blueshirt TDs defending him should tell you why.

  7. Wait, this guy was a Communist and then became a right-wing yoon? 🤨

    Found the Irish George Galloway

  8. The twitter fake account was very low-end. But he was a contrarian voice, which is needed. His big thing was atrocities carried out during the war of independence and the civil war – these did happen and should be explored. He’s also worried about SF, because of their links to thr IRA, which did perpetrate several atrocities itself – some of which SF does not condemn.

These viewpoints are important, but again, the twitter thing was pretty embarrassing.

  9. Not only is Charlie Flanagan a bollocks for supporting Harris, he’s also the reason we still have day light savings, making him an even bigger bollocks.
