Nuclear energy is experiencing a resurgence globally, with nations seeking to enhance their capabilities in this area. According to Yahoo Finance, this form of clean energy is seen as a complement to renewable sources and a provider of stable power for data centers. Fluor, an engineering, procurement, and construction management firm, is positioning itself as a notable participant in this sector.

European Expansion Through a Romanian Hub

The company has established a new office in Bucharest to coordinate its regional nuclear operations. This hub supports two significant endeavors in Romania: a small modular reactor initiative in Doicesti and work on the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant.

The small modular reactor project, known as RoPower, involves Fluor as the lead engineering, procurement, and construction partner. It aims to implement NuScale Power‘s technology at a retired plant site, with a plan for six modules capable of generating a combined 462 megawatts of carbon-free electricity. The venture is a joint effort between the state-owned Nuclearelectrica and Nova Power & Gas.

Following a final investment decision approved by Nuclearelectrica’s shareholders, the project has entered a pre-engineering procurement and construction phase. The current approved plan is for one initial module, with five additional modules contingent on future viability assessments. The target for the first module’s operation is July 2033, with the full six-module facility anticipated by December 2034.

Larger Scale Plant Refurbishment and Expansion

The second initiative at the Cernavoda plant represents a larger financial undertaking for Fluor in terms of capital expenditure and near-term revenue. This program involves the refurbishment of an existing reactor unit and the construction of two new units, representing a multibillion-dollar investment.
