One of the reasons for lifting sanctions against the potash fertilizer producer is the mobilization of American farmers before the election, said Pavlo Klimkin

This week, the United States partially lifted sanctions against Belarus, which is not a trivial event, but has four reasons, the former foreign minister believes Pavlo Klimkin. He expressed this opinion LIGA.net in a comment for YouTube project “Klimkin explains.

The former Foreign Minister reminded that sanctions had been lifted against several banks, a potash fertilizer producer, and the Ministry of Finance of Belarus.

“This is obviously not just a business story. This is a political signal,” Klimkin stated.

He added that conversations with the dictator of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and his entourage began even before the inauguration of the 47th President of the United States Donald Trump. There were confidential contacts there.

“But now the United States has a personal history with Belarus. And this is an interesting story. Everyone knows that Jared Kushner is one of the key participants in our negotiations, he is Trump’s son-in-law. He is a very famous person, by definition, in the Middle East, but very influential in the family. And like the Middle East, we are in the area of interest and under the umbrella of the family,” Klimkin said.

The diplomat noted that Kushner’s family comes from western Belarus, so this is very important to him. In his opinion, there are other businessmen in Trump’s environment who have their own history with Belarus.

Klimkin believes that the second story is a business one. The Americans are now trying to get their hands on Belarusian potash. Belarus and Russia control up to 42% of the potash fertilizer market, so this is a matter of food security. American control over the potash business will take away an “important card” from the Russian dictator Vladimir Putinhe added.

“So what the Americans are doing with regard to these sanctions, on the one hand, is to our hearts, purely emotionally and, in fact, politically. But on the other hand, it still allows the Americans to diversify markets, and very important markets, where Russia and Belarus have a critical attitude,” he explained.

Klimkin also emphasized that this is an internal story for the United States, as American farmers need potash fertilizers. Currently, they mostly buy potash from Canada. And about 90% of farmers vote for the Republican Party and Trump.

“Is it important for Trump to provide farmers with adequate fertilizer at reasonable prices? It is important. Does it help mobilize his electoral core? 100%,” he said.

And the fourth dimension is the desire of the Americans to balance the influence of China and Russia in Belarus. The United States is working very consistently on Belarus, the diplomat noted.

“There are more surprises in store for us. Some of them will probably not be very pleasant. But with the Americans and the Europeans, and maybe even the Chinese, we need to see if there can be some common ground,” he said.
