UK not to copy EU demand for common charging cable

  1. “BBC News has asked the UK government if it intends to pass similar legislation. **But under the current post-Brexit arrangements, the European Union ruling would apply to Northern Ireland**, EU and UK officials have told BBC News.

According to a December 2021 parliamentary report, the “new requirements may also apply to devices sold in Northern Ireland under the terms of the Northern Ireland protocol in the Brexit agreement, potentially triggering divergence of product standards with the rest of the UK”.

The treaty works by keeping Northern Ireland inside the EU’s single market for goods, while mainland Britain is outside it.“

Seems like NI is once again benefiting from the SingleMarket.

  2. Basically a case of damned if you do damned if you don’t as a this sub is concerned.

The U.K. gov has got more important issues to worry about then chargers. The EU locking down technology sold and developed in its markets is good for the U.K. anyway which is positioning itself as a much easier place to do business especially for tech companies.

  3. Wonder what this law will do about other shenanigans? Let’s say Apple makes a USB C charger, to go with their new USB C equipped devices… and ONLY the Apple OEM charger will “fast charge” the device.

Generic USB C chargers may work, but slowly (or not at all, depending on how ballsy Apple is feeling).

Not that hard to do.. USB has data lines that could be used for such a purpose.

And Apple will claim safety reasons or some other bullshit to make it sound reasonable.

  4. “UK Still Leading Fight For Freedom Of Charger Cable Style, Brussels Soon To Give In.”

…will be in some UK tabloid next to an ad for the next iPhone with USB-C.

  5. Makes sense since companies will just adapt to follow EU regulation and we won’t have to lift a finger to make them change anything since businesses will change their chargers to keep access to the EU market.

You could probably take this headline and replace ‘UK’ with Albania, Turkey, etc. (European country outside the Single Market).

  6. lmao, idiotic.
Once USB-C is the norm, it’s going to be even more of a hassle to find a lightning charger when they go on vacation because no one is using them anymore.
