Russia’s Duma mulls revoking recognition of Lithuanian independence

  1. I swear to God, I don’t understand the point of this.

I don’t understand Vladimir Putin saying the stuff about Ukranians not being a people at the start of the invasion. Even if he thought that Ukraine would fall easily, it had to be better to maintain some level of slightly plausible deniability until he controlled Ukraine.

I don’t understand why Putin issued his demands to NATO to withdraw from the ex-Soviet states then. Again, it had to be better to at least wait and see how things went.

I think that it’s probably not in Russia’s interest to try to play the eighteenth-century empire game today. The whole economic system works differently. Economies aren’t mostly primary sector, and conquering territory doesn’t result in capturing of the source of wealth.

But let’s say that you don’t care, are going to do it anyway. Why would you announce it?

Maybe it’s pure domestic politics, gets the nationalists all hot-and-bothered, but then why bother with small fry like the Baltics? Why not announce that you’re going to take over Poland? Germany? Go all the way to the English Channel? Alaska? I’d think that the grander the claim, the more the points you score at home, and the less-actually-threatened the other party feels, the less the international cost.

  2. See Comrades, Lithuania is not a real country, ergo it deserves a special military operation, and no one will notice since we proclaim them to not be a real country

    Duma spokesman, probably

  3. So now Russia and China have a beef with Lithuania… Strange times. Keep being brave, Lithuanians! Pretty much all the danish sendable forces are in the Baltics right now.

  4. Imagine French parliament would mull such bullshit about Algeria. Or the UK about Zimbabwe. Russia should get out of its post-colonialistic woes as fast as possible. The future lies ahead, not behind.
