A suspected drone entered Lithuanian airspace on Monday, “most likely” from Belarus, the country’s armed forces said.
The flying object is said to have crashed into an ice-covered lake some 20 km (12 miles) from the border of Belarus, leaving debris consistent with a drone in its wake.

According to Reuters, Lithuanian military spokesperson Gintautas Ciunis said no explosives have been found at the lake.
“We are very close to Belarus… The most likely assumption is it came from this country,” Ciunis said.
The Lithuanian government is set to meet to discuss the incident on Tuesday, with Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene calling a National Security Commission consultation.
Lithuania is no stranger to airspace violations. In July 2025, the country called on NATO to bolster air defenses along its eastern flank after a Russian drone carrying explosives entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus.
The drone was eventually recovered and disarmed at a Lithuanian military base. Intelligence officials believe its incursion into Lithuanian airspace was most likely accidental.
Late last year, however, Lithuania was plagued by a series of mass crossings by helium weather balloons from Belarus loaded with contraband cigarettes – forcing airport and border closures and leading the EU to sanction Belarus for “hybrid attacks.”
