Latvia has named Janis Gailitis as the new head coach after a slow start in the 2027 World Cup qualifiers.
Latvia has appointed a new head coach for its men’s national basketball team after the opening rounds of the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
The federation has decided to make a change in leadership, handing the head coach role to Janis Gailitis. Before him, the coach was Sito Alonso.
He previously spent nearly a decade as the head coach of VEF Riga, where he built a dominant domestic run.
Under his leadership, VEF captured multiple Latvian League championships and became a consistent contender in regional competitions.
He also gained international experience as part of the Latvian national team coaching staff, working as an assistant coach in recent years and contributing to the team’s performances in major FIBA tournaments.
Gailitis has continued to build his resume in European club basketball as well. After his long tenure in Latvia, he moved abroad to coach in Germany, where he led Mitteldeutscher BC and won the German Cup in 2025.
He is now the head coach of SIG Strasbourg in France, competing in one of Europe’s top domestic leagues.
