The Kabul Tribune (KT) — More than 1,100 Afghan refugees and
family members of active-duty U.S. military personnel have been relocated to a
military base in Doha that has come under threat since the start of the
U.S.-Israel war with Iran, ABC News reported.
Citing the U.S.-based non-profit AfghanEvac, the report said
the refugees are currently housed at Camp As Sayliyah, an unused facility in Doha,
which has been exposed to potential attacks.
Residents told ABC News they initially lacked proper
protection, including bunkers, and were forced to shelter inside buildings
during incoming attacks. Some said shrapnel landed near living areas, including
rooms where children were present.
In recent weeks, additional protective measures, including
concrete barriers and designated bunkers, have reportedly been installed at the
camp.
The U.S. State Department said it is addressing operational
concerns, including the safety of American citizens and camp residents.
Refugees described difficult living conditions and ongoing
uncertainty about their future. Many said they have been at the facility for
more than a year, with limited access to basic needs and no clear timeline for
relocation.
According to the report, around 800 individuals at the camp
have already been vetted and approved for travel to the United States, but
relocation efforts have been halted, leaving many in limbo.
The State Department said there are plans to relocate the
remaining population to a third country by March 31, though residents told ABC
News they have not been informed of where they will be sent or when.
The report also highlighted concerns from refugees who fear
deportation and say they are reliving trauma from years of conflict in
Afghanistan.
The situation comes as regional tensions escalate, placing
the camp and its residents at increased risk amid ongoing hostilities.
