Nothing beats a Sunday roast… it’s part of our DNA. But with rising food prices, many households are having to cut back on this much-loved weekly tradition.

Families are now paying around £58 for the ingredients needed to prepare a typical Sunday lunch, according to frozen food specialist Iceland. Nearly half of the people they surveyed recently are worried that the traditional Sunday roast could disappear from family tables thanks to rising costs.

Higher energy bills and the time and effort involved in shopping and cooking were also cited as reasons families are reconsidering the meal. More than six in 10 respondents said they feel sad that younger generations may not grow up enjoying a traditional Sunday roast most weeks, as many families once did.

COOKING A ROAST?

The supermarket recently launched two new ‘Easter Dinner in a Box‘ bundles aimed at making the meal more affordable, with the lamb option costing £30 and chicken £25. Both meal bundles include a range of traditional trimmings such as roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, parsnips, broccoli, carrots, peas, pigs in blankets and gravy, writes Neil Shaw from Bristol Live. The new product follows the success of Iceland’s ‘Christmas Dinner in a Box’, which sold out.
