The First Secretary of the Party’s Central Committee and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, received Mr. Javier Eduardo Martínez–Acha Vásquez, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Panama, this Wednesday afternoon at the Palace of the Revolution.
The Head of State, who was accompanied by Political Bureau member and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, thanked the Panamanian Foreign Minister for his country’s support of the resolution approved each year at the United Nations against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. government on Cuba.
The Cuban President expressed the country’s desire to increase economic and commercial exchange between the two Latin American nations, noting that while current levels are not high, there is potential for growth.
Foreign Minister Martínez–Acha, who is on a working visit to the island, thanked Díaz-Canel for the warm welcome and the support provided to facilitate his agenda.
Accompanying the Panamanian Foreign Minister at the meeting with President Díaz-Canel were Mr. Edwin Abel Pitty Madrid, Ambassador to our country; Mr. Marcos Caisuutti, presidential advisor; and Mr. Adolfo Ahumada, advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. On the Cuban side, Comrade Ileana Núñez Mordoche, Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also participated.
During his stay in Cuba, Martínez–Acha held discussions with his Caribbean counterpart, during which they addressed issues on the bilateral, regional, and international agendas and assessed the development of relations between the two countries as positive.
As part of his visit to Cuba, Martínez–Acha’s agenda includes, in addition to meetings with Cuban authorities, a visit to the group of Panamanians detained and accused of committing a crime against the constitutional order of the Republic of Cuba, according to a note published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its social media accounts.
