‘It looks beautiful’: UK gardeners on leaving lawns uncut for No Mow May | Gardens

  1. Mines just grown a fuck load of that wheat looking stuff. The bluebells died out about a week ago. Butterfly bush survived its brutal cut back though and is flowering si that’s nice.

  2. I’ve had daisies, buttercups, dandelions, and now clover and have definitely noticed more bees and butterflies. It worked out pretty well because I don’t really like cutting the grass. I think it’s reaching the point where the mower will struggle to cut it now.

  3. I have a couple of clumps of wild flowers that look absolutely lovely and attract bees :)… and 1/2 acer of nipple high brambles and nettles 🙁

  4. I’m afraid I’ve been mowing mine as it’s needed to play footie on, and I need to pick shit up from it. In mitigation, the other side of our fence is a 2 acre wildflower meadow.

  5. Looks lovely and the ticks will love their new “DeliverYou” service when kids and pets walk through it. (Picked one out of the dog’s ear and another from above her eye just the other day after a brief walk on the long grass). Not for my garden.

  6. Ok, this is the first time i’ve heard of it and really? No Mow May? Are we sure it’s not because people either cba to mow it, or the increased energy bills means that mowing it has to either be done manually or not at all? Because there’s been little to no promotion of “No Mow May”.

    Why do we keep making new shit up?

  7. Haven’t mown the lawn in about 15 years.

    And now I get to pretend to be an eco hippy rather than a lazy bastard.

  8. I think this should be a year round thing – imagine the benefit to not only the insects, birds and flowers/grasses but also to us … re-greening our own small spaces; added up over a city it would be really significant.

    My garden is not ‘wild’ but carefully managed in a natural style (i.e. I keep the paths clear) … I allow a lot of self seeding and have lots of tomatoes, strawberries, herbs, damn, even got a potato growing out of a stone wall 🙂 How it got there heaven knows. So yes, even if you have just a little space then it brings a lot of joy without much effort to grow like this. I believe it’s called ‘permaculture’ ;}

  9. For that true Wild Garden look don’t forget to scatter some broken plastic garden furniture about and mount a broken swingball set in the centre, pride of place.
