CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) says they received a report of sheen and petroleum odor in the Kanawha River Thursday night.
WVDEP says its staff responded and observed the sheen from a stormwater outfall near the 300 block of Kanawha Boulevard and notified the City of Charleston Stormwater Department.

Terry Fletcher, a spokesperson with WVDEP, told WSAZ:
“WVDEP and the City inspected potential sources, but none have been identified at this time. Further investigation will include a review of drainage mapping in coordination with the City of Charleston Stormwater Department. Additional controls have been installed at the outfall, and the discharge has decreased.
No impacts to aquatic life have been observed, and no impacts to drinking water sources are expected.”
