La Rioja’s day, celebrated on 9 June, is the national day of this Spanish region, and a festive commemoration of the approval of its Statute of Autonomy, by which it was first declared an Autonomous Community.
It is best known for its wines and its San Millán glosses (considered one of the earliest examples of written Spanish), as well as for its famous Battle of Wine, which is held annually in Haro.
In the picture, you can see Anguiano’s traditional dance on stilts, probably the oldest folkloric tradition in La Rioja, which consists of young people dressed in characteristic costumes who dance down a steep cobblestone slope on top of 45cm stilts.
