The Australian Bureau of Statistics has published experimental statistics on preschool attendance for the 2025 reference period. The data provides a national picture of student attendance in the year before full-time schooling.

According to the figures, a total of 263,519 children were attending preschool. Among this group, 72 percent were estimated to have an annual attendance of 600 hours or more. The statistics also break down attendance for specific groups, showing that 17,642 children identified as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, with 58 percent of them reaching the 600-hour threshold. Furthermore, 47,278 children resided in the most socio-economically disadvantaged areas, and 63 percent of those children met the attendance benchmark.

The data indicates that preschool programs were delivered through different service types. A majority of children, 64 percent, attended only a centre based day care service, and a high proportion of that group, 82 percent, achieved the 600-hour attendance level. In contrast, 23 percent of children attended only a dedicated preschool, with 31 percent of that subgroup reaching the benchmark. A smaller segment, 12 percent, attended both types of services, and nearly all of those children, 97 percent, met the 600-hour mark.

The statistics are labeled as experimental because not all providers submitted complete data for this collection cycle, a situation expected to be resolved in future releases. The reference period for the data was Term 2 of the 2025 schooling year.
