GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) -The Young Democratic Socialists of America club at Colorado Mesa University held a march and protest on campus on Friday.
The rally was called “CMU Melts ICE.” Organizers wanted to draw attention to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The protest comes after multiple people were killed by agents in Minnesota earlier this year.
Protesters had multiple goals: raising money for families in Minnesota and urging the university to commit to non-cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
“I am passionate about social justice and equity, and equality in the community and in the world as a whole. But of course, we can only start so small. And so even participating in events such as these can be extremely helpful in raising awareness and sparking inspiration in other people to join your cause,” said Arielle Lautenschlager, a student at Colorado Mesa University.
Before the protest, the club that organized the event was suspended by the university. Club officials say they were given multiple reasons for the suspension, but they say the reasons didn’t make sense.
A spokesperson at Colorado Mesa University said the club was temporarily suspended because they didn’t follow protocol that any other club on campus follows when it comes to the use of student fees. The spokesperson said the club later followed the protocol and is now in good standing with the university.
