What politicians and the media said about the benefits system in the 1990s and 2000s caused the public to turn against welfare by 2010

  1. You knows to blame for all your problems……..the poor. The ones that work the jobs you wouldn’t want too, who clean up after you, who pick your fruit, who slaughter your meat. That’s the problem, not the tax avoidance company’s, not the landlords exploiting people to further their wealth. It’s the poor. Fuck me all……..some Tory prick, probably

  2. Its tragically hilarious that people can’t see its the same “useless eater” rhetoric the rights been peddling for nearly a century now. Its barely changed at all. “Dont look up.”

If they hate lazy scroungers living off of other peoples hard work, they should see commercial landlords and non-work participating shareholders.

They’re going to lose their minds.

  3. Calling it “benefits” for a start is part of the problem.

There’s no fucking joy or ‘benefit’ in living off social security/welfare with a slum landlord and a damp bedsit. From a financial point of view I couldn’t care less if there are a tiny minority of people who are content to live like that, not work and drink themselves to death*.

The real cost to the taxpayer is at the other end with tax dodging/avoiding shitheads, chumocracy around Brexit/covid deals, etc

I’d like the media to turn the public against the rich, not the impoverished.

**from a human/social point of view these people need help to find meaning with their lives and shouldn’t be left to rot*

  4. That is a fascinating article.
And also quite frightening because it shows how social engineering on a large scale can turn the opinion of millions of people toward, hating an entire subgroup of society.
This type of control over the perception of reality is very powerful. There are not enough checks and balances over those that own the media in this country.

  5. Yea, because who would want a security net to prevent you from dying on the streets, starving and desperate. If you’ve never been there, yet, why would you care and want (a tiny amount) of your tax money paying for those lazy druggies with the ‘big screen telly’

    Fucking idiots

  6. Shows like The Jeremy Kyle Show and Benefits Street did nothing to help too. Poor people became entertainment and people watched them with a mix of “Well, at least my life is never going to be *that* bad.” and hatred for what they saw as a free ride. For every person on benefits living ‘the high life’ many were struggling to get by and living in conditions benefited no one.

  7. Where’s that one video series about “British TV shows in the 2000s?” Pretty accurate if you ask me.
