According to Platts, the Mediterranean region is emerging as a critical demand center for liquefied natural gas from the Atlantic Basin. This shift follows supply outages in the Middle East and the effective closure of a key shipping strait, which have reduced the availability of flexible LNG cargoes for Southern Europe and Turkey. Market participants noted that these events have removed a significant volume of flexible supply from the global system, tightening prompt availability.

Supply and Price Impact

Data from S&P Global Energy CERA shows a decline in Qatari exports to Europe in the current year compared to the same period last year. Volumes sent specifically to Mediterranean destinations have fallen sharply. Price assessments for the Mediterranean and East Mediterranean markers show specific values relative to the Northwest Europe benchmark. Although prices have retreated from recent peaks observed in mid-March, they remain elevated. The price surge followed reports of missile strikes on a major Qatari export facility.

Shift to Atlantic Suppliers

With Qatari volumes reduced and shipping constrained, spot and flexible LNG availability into the Mediterranean has decreased sharply. This disruption has shifted attention to Atlantic Basin suppliers, particularly the United States, as a primary source for additional cargoes. Traders indicated that buyers in Italy, Greece, and Turkey have become more active in the spot market, intensifying competition for prompt deliveries. This activity risks altering traditional arbitrage flows, potentially pulling cargoes toward the Mediterranean and away from other regions.

Turkey’s Role and Market Balances

Turkey is expected to play an increasingly pivotal role in the regional LNG balance in the coming weeks. The country’s energy minister recently stated that gas flows from Iran have halted and mentioned diversification of supply sources. Data from CERA shows that Turkey has imported 6.21 million metric tons of LNG so far in 2026. However, near-term demand signals are mixed, with some traders suggesting Turkey may have sufficient supply coverage in the short term, potentially delaying significant new purchases until June.

This timing could further tighten market balances as June coincides with Europe’s summer injection season for storage facilities. While Europe is expected to compete for additional spot cargoes this summer to replace lost volumes and refill storage, the high price environment could lead to some level of demand destruction. Traders said Europe was likely to import more LNG than the record high seen last year, but with a substantial portion of global supply curtailed and prices elevated, buyers may seek alternatives such as pipeline gas. Current price spreads between LNG and the TTF hub may incentivize more pipeline purchases over the summer.

Alternative Supply Strategies

An Italian think tank reported that Italy could replace a large portion of its missing Qatari LNG volumes within a year using a mixture of renewable energy switching, biomethane, and other energy measures. According to the group’s estimates, renewable growth could replace a specific volume of annual gas demand, with biomethane and other measures covering additional volumes. The report stated that a remaining volume would need to be replaced with like-for-like gas imports through existing infrastructure.
