Union Chapel in Islington has been recognised by the City of Sanctuary movement, a national network that promotes welcome and inclusion for those affected by forced displacement.
The church, known internationally for hosting artists such as Amy Winehouse, Björk, Billy Bragg, Ed Sheeran, and Elton John, also runs projects supporting homeless people and migrants.
The Reverend Cathy Bird, minister of Union Chapel, said: “Receiving Church of Sanctuary status is a profound honour and a testament to the dedication and compassion shown by everyone across the Union Chapel family.”
Inderjit Bhogal OBE, founder of the City of Sanctuary movement, presented the award to Rev Bird at a special event held at the chapel.
The designation builds on wider support in the area, after Islington was named a Borough of Sanctuary in 2023 for its commitment to welcoming refugees.
Church of Sanctuary status recognises sustained excellence in learning from people seeking sanctuary, embedding inclusive practices, and sharing this vision with others.
