Central Statistical Bureau provisional data show that in 2025 meat production in Latvia was down but egg production was up. It was also a bad year to be a bee.

In all, 90.2 thousand tonnes of meat were produced, which is 0.4 thousand tonnes (0.5 %) fewer than in 2024. 

Increased output was recorded in the production of pork (up by 1.9 %) and poultry (1.6 %), while output reduced in the production of beef and veal (down by 9.4 %) as well as sheep and goat meat (16.7 %). 

Poultry and pork took the largest share of all produced meat, 43.3 % and 39.0 % respectively. The share of beef and veal fell from 18.6 % in 2024 to 16.9 % in 2025.

At the end of 2025, the number of laying hens increased by 952.5 thousand (26.8 %) and egg production rose by 107.1 million (12.5 %). Hens’ eggs made up 97.6 % of all eggs produced (97.1 % in 2024), and one laying hen on average produced 304 eggs (up by 1.0 % compared with 2024).

Compared with 2024, the exports of live swine increased by 8.0 thousand (3.0 %), with piglets for further fattening representing 76.8 % of all exported pigs (81.9 % in 2024). The number of imported live swine reduced by 28.6 thousand (14.0 %). 

The number of exported live bovine animals fell by 2.3 thousand (2.8 %), while the number of imported live bovine animals rose by 3.0 thousand (2.2 times).

The number of exported live sheep declined by 1.8 thousand (45.7 %).

Growth in pig and poultry populations

Compared with the end of 2024, the end of 2025 recorded increase in the number of pigs (up by 7.6 thousand pigs or 2.5 %) and poultry (1.0 million or 17.5 %).

Declines were recorded in the populations of cattle (down by 1.6 thousand or 0.5 %), sheep (1.6 thousand or 2.4 %), and goats (0.4 thousand or 4.8 %). 

Milk production up

The number of dairy cows dropped from 113.0 thousand at the end of 2024 to 111.6 thousand at the end of 2025, that is by 1.3 %.

In 2025, a total of 978.7 thousand tonnes of raw milk (including goat’s milk) was produced, representing an increase of 17.8 thousand tonnes (1.8 %) compared with 2024. Milk procurement and processing companies purchased 85.9 % (839.5 thousand tonnes) of all raw milk produced (86.9 % or 833.8 thousand tonnes in 2024). 

The average milk yield per dairy cow increased by 436 kilogrammes (5.3 %), reaching 8 675 kilogrammes.

Bad year to be a bee

Compared with 2024, the number of bee colonies reduced by 1.3 thousand (1.4 %), and honey production fell by 783 tonnes (35.7 %). The average sale price for honey increased by 1.4 %.
