Sonipat: A 21-year-old man from Mai Majri village in Sonipat district, Sagar Rana, died in a tragic accident in the Netherlands, plunging his impoverished family into grief and a financial crisis as they struggle to bring his body back to India.According to family members, Sagar had travelled to France on a tourist visa on Nov 26, 2024, hoping to find work abroad. After failing to secure employment there, he moved to the Netherlands on the advice of a friend who assured him of a job.After finding work in the Netherlands, Sagar reportedly accompanied a friend to cut a tree. As the friend was unfamiliar with the task, Sagar climbed the tree himself. Though he managed to cut it, he slipped while climbing down and fell, hitting his head on a stone. The impact caused serious head injuries.He was rushed to a hospital, where he remained admitted from March 21 to March 30. Doctors conducted two head surgeries in an attempt to save him, but Sagar succumbed to his injuries.The family said he was employed by a man known as “Surya”, who allegedly vacated his residence and went missing after Sagar’s death. His phone has since remained switched off.Sagar’s younger brother said he last spoke to him on March 19. “We used to talk every evening. After that, there was no response. Later, we were informed about the accident,” he said.The family alleged that all information was conveyed through a locally appointed nominee, without direct communication with hospital authorities.Sagar’s uncle, Anil Bangar, said an application has been submitted to the Indian embassy, but the repatriation process has stalled due to lack of funds. The family, burdened by loans of ₹20–25 lakh taken to send Sagar abroad, has appealed to the government and NGOs for assistance.Sagar’s father, a former truck driver, has no stable income. The family says bringing Sagar home for his last rites remains their only wish.
