ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) – Indiana U.S. Sen. Todd Young joined a fireside chat hosted by the Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, outlining several ways Indiana can strengthen its economy.
Young discussed the administration’s push to rebuild American shipbuilding. The senator said Indiana could benefit, creating new opportunities for Hoosiers.
Young also talked about the recent ceasefire deal the U.S. has made with Iran.
“I’m so glad that President Trump, through exercising some leverage, was able to get a climb down from the Iranians,” Young said. “Now the next step is to negotiate a peaceful and successful outcome to this whole conflict.”
Young praised President Trump for making changes to immigration policy but said the U.S. should also welcome more highly skilled workers who come here legally.
“I think that President Trump is laying the groundwork for making longer-term and sustainable changes to our legal immigration system,” Young said. “So, what we need is a sustainable approach. Secure the border first, and it’s basically there. And let’s start looking to reform the legal immigration system.”
Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson pushed back on Senator Young’s comments, saying whether they’re skilled or unskilled, immigrants help strengthen the community.
