Latvian Postal Service (Latvijas Pasts) is issuing a stamp and a specially designed envelope dedicated to Kārlis Goppers, a general in the Latvian Armed Forces, on the 150th anniversary of his birth, the postal service announced.
Kārlis Goppers is a well-known figure in military circles and in the field of patriotic education for youth. He was a general in the Latvian Armed Forces, an officer in the Latvian Riflemen, a recipient of the Order of Lāčplēsis, and the only president of the Latvian Scouts. Goppers actively participated in the formation of the state and consistently advocated for responsible civic participation.
During the Soviet occupation, Goppers was arrested in Rīga on September 30, 1940, and on March 25, 1941, he was executed.
The year 2026 marks the 150th anniversary of the general’s birth, and Latvijas Pasts is also commemorating the Latvian Armed Forces general by issuing a stamp titled “Kārlis Goppers 150” with a face value of 2.35 euros. It will be available in a print run of 10,000 copies, while the specially designed envelope will be issued in a print run of 500 copies. The design of the philatelic issue was created by artist Lilija Dinere.
The new stamp will be available for purchase at the Latvijas Pasts online store and at customer centres and customer service points.
In honour of the Latvian Armed Forces general, an exhibition titled “Goppers 150” has been set up at Brīvības Street 40 in Riga. It combines archival materials, visual storytelling, and a spatial experience into a conceptually structured narrative, offering a glimpse into the defining moments of Gopper’s life.
The exhibition will be on view until May 5 and was created in close collaboration with Goppers’ family, the Latvian Scout and Guide Central Organisation, and the Latvian War Museum.
